Lesson 63 — I'm Not Completely Convinced
1. Before You Start
- 用缓和表达说明自己尚未接受一个结论;
- 追问证据与结论之间的连接;
- 区分“材料提示了什么”和“材料尚未显示什么”;
- 承认一个方案的合理之处,同时提出具体担忧;
2. Main Conversation
A small test answers a small question
Daniel, Aisha and Grace review the three-person prototype check proposed in Lesson 62. Each staff tester used the paper checklist and then attempted the optional QR questions with generic route content.
Part A — Testing the claim, not the person
Daniel: The QR responses took less time to submit and included two useful later reflections. I think the two-stage method worked.
Aisha: I'm not completely convinced. What evidence supports the claim that the whole method worked?
Grace: Let’s separate the results. All three testers completed the paper form and marked an exact route location.
Daniel: The average paper time was three minutes thirty-five seconds. Two testers skipped the open comment box.
Aisha: And the QR form?
Grace: Two testers completed it in about two minutes ten seconds. One stopped when the connection failed.
Daniel: The two completed QR responses added explanations that weren’t on paper. That suggests later reflection can add detail.
Aisha: It suggests that for those two responses, but it doesn’t show that a QR follow-up would work reliably for everyone.
Grace: Correct. The strongest evidence is about response type and prototype clarity, not visitor preference.
Daniel: I can see the limitation. Still, the later comments described why two locations felt confusing.
Part B — Naming the evidence gap
Aisha: I can see the case for an optional follow-up, but my concern is the failed connection and the tiny staff-only sample.
Daniel: Are you saying the QR prototype has no value?
Aisha: No. I’m saying the evidence is narrower than your conclusion. One failure doesn’t prove the tool is unreliable, either.
Grace: Then what would change your mind about testing the optional stage again?
Aisha: A stable connection, clearer wording that paper is already complete, and testers who were not involved in planning the route.
Daniel: That seems fair. Would five independent testers be enough to justify another internal check?
Aisha: Enough to examine clarity and completion, perhaps. It still wouldn’t establish public preference.
Grace: So we seem to agree on the evidence: paper worked for all three; two QR responses added detail; one connection failed.
Daniel: And we still disagree about how much that supports a two-stage method.
Aisha: Exactly. Let’s carry that precise disagreement into the final decision instead of forcing agreement now.
Prototype check report
| Observation | Paper | Optional QR | Supported conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| completed | 3 of 3 | 2 of 3 | paper was completed more consistently in this check |
| average completion time | 3:35 | 2:10 among completions | completed QR responses were faster |
| exact location identified | 3 | 2 | both prototypes can invite location detail |
| open explanation added | 1 | 2 | the two completed QR responses added more explanation |
| technical interruption | 0 | 1 | one QR attempt failed during a connection problem |
All three testers were arts center staff and used both prototypes. The check did not measure natural format choice or represent future visitors.
Check the story
- Why does Daniel think the two-stage method worked?
- What did all three testers complete?
- What happened during one QR attempt?
- What does the small check support?
- What does Aisha say would change her mind about another test?
- What disagreement remains?

I'm not completely convinced
4. Read, Notice, Understand
Two QR responses added later explanations.
Later reflection may add detail.
The two-stage method works for everyone.
- 当前未接受的具体结论;
- 已承认的有效证据;
- 仍存在的证据缺口;
I don’t like it无法帮助讨论前进。
- 某个问题容易误解;
- 某个步骤在本次测试中失败;
5. What People Actually Say
1. I'm not completely convinced.
I'm not completely convinced that this result supports a public change.
2. What evidence supports that?
What evidence supports the claim that the second stage is necessary?
3. That suggests …, but it doesn't show …
That suggests the wording is clear, but it doesn’t show which format people prefer.
4. I can see the case for …, but …
I can see the case for a follow-up, but the connection needs to be reliable.
5. My concern is …
My concern is the staff-only sample.
6. What would change your mind?
What would change your mind about another internal test?
Don’t Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| I don’t believe you. | 把证据分歧变成人际不信任 | I’m not convinced that the evidence supports that conclusion. |
| Three people prove nothing. | 把有限价值也全部抹掉 | The check shows response types, but not broad preference. |
| The QR form failed. | 一次连接失败被泛化 | One QR attempt stopped during a connection failure. |
| Give me more evidence. | 不清楚需要哪类证据 | I’d need a stable connection and independent testers. |
6. Grammar in the Scene —
The two later comments suggest that extra time may produce more detail.
They do not prove that every user needs a second form.
A follow-up may add detail.
A connection failure could interrupt completion.
The wording might need another check.
3. seem / appear
The paper form seems easier to complete offline.
The second question appears to invite explanations.
随后仍要写依据和范围:in this three-person check。
Two of the three staff testers completed the QR form.
In this check, paper had a higher completion rate.
People completed paper more often。
I’m not convinced yet. I’d need …
- Two detailed replies (suggest / prove) that extra time may help.
- One failure (proves / could indicate) a connection risk.
- The paper form (seems / definitely is) easier offline in this check.
- Three staff members (represent / do not represent) all future visitors.
- This result does not show (whether / that) people naturally prefer QR.
- I’m not convinced yet; I’d need ______ independent testers. (more / all)
7. Sound Natural —
I’m not completely CONVINCED.
That suggests later reflection can add DETAIL, / but it doesn’t show RELIABILITY.
My concern is / the STAFF-ONLY SAMPLE. ↘
What would change your MIND? ↗
I’m not completely convinced.
What evidence supports that?
That suggests one benefit, but it doesn’t show broad preference.
What would change your mind?
8. Practice
- Three of three testers completed the QR form.
- Every paper response identified a route location.
- The QR completions were slower than paper on average.
- Aisha says the QR prototype has no value.
- The group agrees on the observations but not their full meaning.
- The group approves public use at the end of the conversation.
B. Observation / Suggestion / Unsupported claim
分类:
- Two completed QR responses included later explanations.
- Extra reflection time may invite more detail.
- All visitors will provide better answers online.
- One QR attempt stopped during a connection problem.
- Connection quality could affect completion.
- The QR tool is always unreliable.
- Paper is easier for everyone.
- QR always produces more detail.
- Staff tests are useless.
- One failed attempt proves the platform is broken.
- Faster completion means better feedback.
- 先确认可核对的速度数据;
suggests … but doesn’t show …限制结论; - 说出一个具体担忧;
- 回答什么会改变判断;
Lena
- 三项纸质结果;
- 三项QR结果;
- Daniel如何解释;
- Aisha的保留意见;
- 双方同意的事实;
- 尚未解决的分歧;
I’m not completely convinced that …What evidence supports …?That suggests …, but it doesn’t show …My concern is …What would change my mind is …
- one missing comparison;
- one clearer sample description;
- one current technical check;
- one decision the evidence will inform;
- one deadline or review point.
9. Make It Yours
- 把相关说成因果;
- 把一次经历说成总是如此;
- 把没有证据说成相反结论;
不要只写I need more information。写成:
I would reconsider if five independent testers completed both prototypes under a stable connection and the result still showed a clear difference in response detail.
ACKNOWLEDGE → RESERVATION → EVIDENCE → SUGGESTS / DOESN’T SHOW → CONCERN → CHANGE MY MIND

- All three staff testers completed paper in this check, which suggests that it was easier to complete in this setting; it does not show that paper is easier for everyone.
- Two completed QR responses contained later explanations, so QR may invite some additional detail; three attempts cannot establish what it always produces.
- This staff check cannot represent visitors, but it can reveal whether the prototype questions are clear to these testers.
- One of three QR attempts stopped during a connection failure; that indicates a risk to check, not proof that the platform is broken.
- The two QR completions were faster in this check, but speed alone does not establish feedback quality.
Suppose we tried the prototypes with five independent testers. What if the connection failed again? If all five could complete both forms, we would have a clearer comparison of response types. That might work if the instructions made the optional stage clear. One possible consequence is a longer analysis period. We could test it by using generic route content, recording completion and timing, and not collecting names.
Which check makes more sense for the next question? Compared with the three-person check, five independent testers would cost more time but reduce planning-team influence. The main advantage is a clearer test of question wording. The downside is that five people still would not represent public visitors. Because our goal is prototype clarity, not public preference, the larger internal check may be useful. Therefore, on balance, I would recommend it only if the connection is stable and the review deadline allows the extra work.
- I’m not completely convinced by that conclusion.
- What evidence supports that?
- That suggests later reflection may add detail, but it doesn’t show that the system is reliable for everyone.
- I can see the case for an optional follow-up, but the connection problem remains.
