Lesson 62 — Suppose We Tried This

1. Before You Start

  • Suppose … / What if …?邀请对方探索方案;
  • 用第二条件句讨论当前尚属假设的做法和可能结果;
  • 区分“值得测试”“已经决定”和“将会发生”;
  • 说出一个方案成立所需的条件及可能副作用;

If we used both forms, …

2. Main Conversation

Exploring a combination before approving it

After Lesson 61, paper is the provisional default for the internal route rehearsal. Daniel wonders whether a small optional digital follow-up could add useful detail without removing the device-free route.

Part A — Making the hypothetical concrete

Daniel: Suppose we tried a two-stage method: a three-question paper checklist at the exit and an optional QR follow-up later.

Aisha: What would the second stage add that the paper form doesn’t already collect?

Daniel: If people had another twenty-four hours, they might remember a detail after leaving the building.

Grace: That might work if the QR form asked only two reflection questions. A second full checklist would create duplicate work.

Aisha: What if someone used only the paper form?

Daniel: Their response would still be complete. The QR stage would be optional, not a missing half of the process.

Grace: If we used one anonymous symbol on both forms, we could compare immediate and later comments without collecting names.

Aisha: One possible consequence is that people could think the symbol identifies them.

Daniel: Then we would need a short privacy note explaining that the three symbols are random and contain no personal information.

Grace: Or we could avoid linking the forms at all. We would lose the comparison, but the process would be simpler.

Part B — Designing a limited test

Aisha: I’d prefer the simpler version. If we added tracking before we knew we needed it, we would create an unnecessary privacy concern.

Daniel: Fair point. Suppose the paper form collected the route location, and the optional QR form collected only later reflections.

Grace: In that case, we wouldn’t try to match one person’s two responses. We would compare the kinds of detail each method produces.

Aisha: The downside is extra analysis time. We would have two small sets of comments instead of one.

Daniel: We could test it by making one paper prototype and one two-question QR prototype, then asking three staff members to use both.

Grace: If the same testers used both, we could inspect the response types, but we couldn’t measure natural format preference.

Aisha: Exactly. The test would answer “What detail does each form invite?” not “Which method would visitors choose?”

Daniel: That’s a useful limit. I’ll draft the two prototypes, but I won’t publish or distribute them.

Grace: If the drafts stay anonymous and use only generic route content, I’ll review the questions tomorrow.

Aisha: Good. We’re agreeing to examine a prototype, not to adopt a two-stage public system.

Hypothesis card

Proposed feature Possible benefit Possible consequence Test limit
3-question paper exit form immediate location mark; no device later data entry generic route only
optional 2-question QR follow-up later reflection two data sets; phone needed not a required stage
no cross-form tracking simpler privacy message cannot pair responses compare response types only

Check the story

  1. What does Daniel’s two-stage idea contain?
  2. Can a paper-only response be complete?
  3. Why does Aisha question anonymous symbols?
  4. What simplification does the group choose?
  5. What can the proposed test show?
  6. What has the group not approved?

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Status Example Meaning
hypothesis If we used two forms, we would get two sets of comments.
limited test Daniel will draft two unpublished prototypes.
adoption We will use both forms at the public event.

If we used both forms, we would need more analysis time.

5. What People Actually Say

1. Suppose we tried …

Suppose we tried a shorter form first.

2. What if we …?

What if we removed the tracking symbol?

3. If we did that, we would …

If we did that, we would lose the ability to pair responses.

4. That might work if …

That might work if the second form stayed optional.

5. One possible consequence is …

One possible consequence is extra analysis time.

6. We could test it by …

We could test it by comparing two unpublished prototypes.

Don’t Say It That Way

Suppose we will use both. suppose后的假设框架不自然 Suppose we used both.
If we would add QR, … 标准第二条件句的if从句不用would If we added QR, …
We tested it, so it is approved. The test supports another review; it does not approve public use.
Three staff would prove what visitors prefer. Three staff could show whether the prototype questions are clear.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

If we used two forms, we would need more analysis time.

If we used paper first, everyone could respond without a phone.
If people had more time, they might remember another detail.

  • would:预期结果;
  • could:能力或机会;

If the form were shorter, more people might finish it.

If Grace approves the draft tomorrow, Daniel will print three test copies.

If they used both forms publicly, they would need a clearer privacy notice.

We could test the prototype.
We will adopt the system.

  1. Suppose we ______ (try) a two-question follow-up.
  2. If we ______ (use) both forms, we ______ (have) two data sets.
  3. If the second stage were optional, people ______ (can) stop after paper.
  4. One possible consequence ______ (be) extra analysis time.
  5. If Grace ______ (approve) the real draft tomorrow, Daniel will print three test copies.
  6. That might work if the privacy note ______ (be) clear.

7. Sound Natural —

Suppose

SUPPOSE / we tried a two-stage method. ↗

If we used BOTH FORMS, / we would need more ANALYSIS TIME.

One possible CONSEQUENCE is / duplicate work.

That MIGHT work / if the second stage stayed OPTIONAL. ↘

Suppose we tried a two-stage method.
What if someone used only the paper form?
One possible consequence is extra analysis time.
We could test it by comparing two prototypes.

8. Practice

  1. The QR follow-up would be required.
  2. The group decides to link responses to names.
  3. Not linking the forms simplifies the privacy question.
  4. The prototype test can measure natural visitor preference.
  5. Daniel may draft prototypes without publishing them.
  6. The group has approved a permanent public system.

  1. If the printer confirms today, we (will print / would print) three copies tomorrow.
  2. If we used eight questions, the form (will take / would take) too long.
  3. If Grace approves the final test wording, Daniel (will add / would add) it to the prototype.
  4. If the QR stage were optional, paper-only responses (will remain / would remain) complete.
  5. If the current connection fails during tomorrow’s test, we (will record / would record) the failure.
  6. If we tracked every response, we (will create / would create) a new privacy concern.

  1. Suppose we shortened the paper form to one question.
  2. What if the QR form stayed open for a week?
  3. Suppose the debrief happened in a group.
  4. What if testers could choose any method?

必须使用would / could / might各至少一次。

D. Lesson 61

  • Which one makes more sense for …?
  • Compared with …, …
  • The main advantage is …
  • The downside is …
  • Because … / Therefore …
  • On balance, …

E. Lesson 60

  1. 把“可能”与“批准”分开;
  2. 承认两边各一项合理考虑;
  3. 提出一个不公开的有限测试;
  4. 说明测试能和不能回答什么;

  • two Suppose / What if questions;
  • two second conditionals;
  • one possible consequence;
  • one condition for success;
  • one limited test.

  • hypothesis;
  • prototype scope;
  • participants or materials;
  • information not collected;
  • one expected benefit and one possible consequence;
  • evidence the test can produce;
  • decision the test cannot make.

9. Make It Yours

  • If I did this, I would …
  • It might work if …
  • One possible consequence is …
  • I could test it by …
  • The test would show …
  • The test would not show …

圈出will / definitely / we are going to。

SUPPOSE → IF / WOULD → CONDITION → CONSEQUENCE → LIMITED TEST → NOT YET DECIDED

  1. A three-question paper checklist at the exit and an optional two-question QR follow-up later.
  2. Yes. The QR stage would not be a required half.

Suppose we shortened the paper form to one question. More people might finish it, but we would probably lose location detail. We could test it by asking three staff members to answer both the one-question and three-question versions, then compare what information disappears. The result would show response detail in this small internal task; it would not prove which version all visitors would prefer.

Which one makes more sense for a short rehearsal? Compared with one long form, two short stages separate immediate and later comments. The main advantage is that the first stage can stay device-free. The downside is that two sets require more analysis. Because the second stage would be optional, paper-only feedback could remain complete. Therefore, on balance, a limited prototype comparison makes more sense than immediate public use.

We need another way to collect the test response. Our top priority is anonymity. The first tool stores an identifying account, so that rules it out. The best available option is the computer-only tool used on a shared test device. We need to allow time for each tester to use the device separately. Let’s confirm that the tool deletes the local test response after export.

  1. Suppose we tried a two-stage method.
  2. What if someone used only the paper form?
