Lesson 61 — Which One Makes More Sense?

1. Before You Start

  • 把“我喜欢”转换为可比较的标准;
  • 用比较级、whereascompared with对齐方案;
  • 分别说明优势、代价和限制;
  • because说明理由,用therefore连接结论;

  • QR form

2. Main Conversation

Three reasonable options, one specific task

Daniel, Aisha and Grace are preparing a short internal route rehearsal at Harbor Street Arts Center. Three staff testers will walk past blank panels and generic direction signs, then report where the route feels unclear.

Part A — Building the comparison

Daniel: We have three feedback methods: a large-print paper checklist, a QR form, or a short facilitated debrief. Which one makes more sense for this rehearsal?

Aisha: Before we choose, what are our criteria?

Grace: No personal device should be required, comments should identify an exact location, and collection should finish within fifteen minutes.

Daniel: We also have only one facilitator. Compared with paper, the QR form is cheaper and faster to submit.

Aisha: That’s true, but it requires a phone and a stable connection. The paper checklist works without either.

Grace: The paper version costs eighteen dollars to print and takes about three minutes per tester. Its main advantage is that people can mark the route map directly.

Daniel: The downside is later data entry. With the QR form, the results would already be organized by location.

Aisha: The facilitated debrief could produce more detailed explanations, whereas a checklist might produce shorter answers.

Grace: It takes about five minutes per person, though. Three separate conversations would use the whole fifteen-minute collection window.

Daniel: And a group debrief would be quicker, but one person’s comments might influence the others.

Part B — Recommending without overclaiming

Aisha: So the paper checklist meets the device and location criteria better than the QR form.

Daniel: The QR form performs better on cost and data entry. Neither option is better on every criterion.

Grace: Exactly. Our top priority is collecting location-specific comments without requiring a personal device.

Aisha: That rules out using QR as the only method for this rehearsal.

Daniel: What about the debrief? It gives richer detail than paper.

Grace: Yes, but it leaves no time margin. We need to allow time for instructions and one late tester.

Aisha: Because the checklist meets the two highest-priority criteria, it makes more sense as the default.

Daniel: Therefore, my recommendation is paper for the rehearsal, with one optional spoken follow-up question.

Grace: On balance, that is the best available option for this thirty-minute session, not necessarily for the public event.

Aisha: Agreed. Let’s confirm the printing cost and large-print layout before we treat the recommendation as final.

Option card

Method Cost Time per tester Device needed Location detail Main limitation
large-print paper checklist $18 about 3 min no tester marks map later data entry
QR form $0 about 2 min yes location menu phone and connection required
individual debrief $0 about 5 min no rich spoken detail uses full 15-minute window

Check the story

  1. What four limits shape the decision?
  2. What is the paper checklist’s main advantage?
  3. Why is the QR form attractive to Daniel?
  4. What risk comes with a group debrief?
  5. Why do they reject QR as the only method?
  6. Is paper chosen permanently for the public event?

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Preference is not yet a recommendation

I like the QR form.

criterion → comparison → trade-off → conclusion → scope

例如:

The paper form does not require a device, whereas the QR form does. Because device-free access is our top priority, paper makes more sense for this rehearsal.

  • QR is cheaper than paper.
  • Paper is less dependent on technology than QR.
  • A debrief provides more detailed comments, but it is more time-consuming.

Option A is better之前,必须补充better for what

5. What People Actually Say

1. Which one makes more sense for …?

Which one makes more sense for a fifteen-minute check?

2. Compared with …, …

Compared with a group discussion, a form gives each person more independence.

3. The main advantage is …

The main advantage is that no phone is required.

4. The downside is …

The downside is the extra data entry.

5. Because …, … / Therefore, …

Because the deadline is fixed, we need the shorter option. Therefore, I recommend the checklist.

6. On balance, …

On balance, paper is the better fit for this rehearsal.

Don’t Say It That Way

Paper is the best. Paper is the best fit for our device-free criterion.
QR is more convenient. QR is faster to submit and easier to organize.
This one has no disadvantages. Its main advantage is speed; the downside is phone dependence.
Therefore it is cheaper because it is free. It is free. Therefore, it performs better on cost.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

The QR form is cheaper than the paper form.
A debrief is more detailed than a checklist.
Paper is less dependent on technology than QR.

2. whereas

Paper works without a phone, whereas QR requires one.

Paper makes more sense because it meets the top priority.

Because it meets the top priority, paper makes more sense.

QR requires a personal device. Therefore, it cannot be our only method.

Paper is cheaper, but the debrief is friendly.

Paper costs $18, whereas both spoken options cost $0. The debrief provides more detail, but it takes longer.

  1. The QR form is ______ (cheap) than paper.
  2. A debrief is ______ detailed than a checklist. (more / most)
  3. Paper works offline, ______ QR requires a connection.
  4. ______ the collection window is short, time matters.
  5. The group discussion may influence later speakers. ______, separate responses are safer.
  6. On balance, paper is the better fit ______ this rehearsal. (for / than)

7. Sound Natural —

QR is CHEAPER, / whereas paper is more ACCESSIBLE OFFLINE.

The main ADVANTAGE is speed. / The DOWNSIDE is phone dependence.

It fails our device-free criterion. / THEREFORE, / it cannot be the only method.

On balance

On BALANCE, / paper makes more sense for this rehearsal. ↘

Which one makes more sense for this rehearsal?
Compared with paper, QR is cheaper and faster.
The main advantage is device-free access.
On balance, paper is the better fit.

8. Practice

  1. The rehearsal will use candidate photographs from the exhibition.
  2. The QR form costs less than the printed checklist.
  3. The paper checklist requires a personal device.
  4. Three individual debriefs would use the full collection window.
  5. The group chooses QR as the only method.
  6. The recommendation is limited to one internal rehearsal.

  1. paper vs QR — cost;
  2. paper vs QR — device dependence;
  3. paper vs debrief — response detail;
  4. QR vs debrief — data organization;
  5. debrief vs paper — time margin.

I prefer the debrief.

  • relevant criterion;
  • one advantage;
  • one downside;
  • scoped conclusion.

A product page says a survey tool works offline. One review says, “It never saves anything.” The current technical note says offline drafts save locally but require a connection before submission.

  • The strongest evidence is …
  • That’s one person’s experience.
  • That doesn’t prove …
  • Based on the details that matter to us, …

  1. 说出三项标准;
  2. 每个方案至少说一项优势和一项代价;
  3. 进行两次同标准比较;
  4. 给出有限推荐;

  • task and criteria;
  • two direct comparisons;
  • advantage and downside;
  • recommendation and scope;
  • one detail to confirm before action.

9. Make It Yours

  • top priority;
  • acceptable limit;
  • useful but optional feature.

None of the current options works.,不要为了完成练习强行选择。

  • better in what way;
  • easier for whom;
  • useful for which task;
  • what evidence supports it.

CRITERIA → COMPARE → ADVANTAGE → DOWNSIDE → BECAUSE → ON BALANCE

10. Answer Key

Check the story

  1. No personal device, exact-location comments, collection within fifteen minutes and no more than one facilitator.
  2. Testers can mark the route map directly without using a phone.
  3. It costs nothing, is quick to submit and organizes responses automatically.
  4. One person’s comments may influence the others.
  5. It fails the no-personal-device criterion.
  6. No. Paper is recommended only for this internal rehearsal, subject to cost and layout confirmation.

  1. cheaper
  2. more
  3. whereas
  4. Because
  5. Therefore
  6. for

7A

  1. False
  2. True
  3. False
  4. True
  5. False
  6. True

  1. The QR form is cheaper than the paper checklist.
  2. Paper is less dependent on personal technology than QR.
  3. A debrief provides more detailed responses than paper.
  4. QR organizes results more automatically than a spoken debrief.
  5. A debrief leaves less time margin than paper.

Detailed explanations are important because the route problem may be hard to describe on a checklist. The main advantage of a debrief is that the facilitator can ask a follow-up question. The downside is time: three separate conversations would use the full collection window, and a group discussion might influence later comments. On balance, I would not use a debrief as the only method for this rehearsal. I would keep one spoken follow-up after a shorter default form.

  1. We need another way to hold the meeting.
  2. Our top priority is not collecting personal information.
  3. The platform cannot export results. That rules it out.
  4. The best available option is the paper form.
  5. We need to allow time for explaining the form.
  6. Let’s confirm the large-print deadline with the printer.

The strongest evidence is the current technical note: drafts can be saved offline, but submission still requires a connection. One review says the tool never saves, but that’s one person’s experience. It doesn’t prove that local drafts always fail. The product page’s word “offline” is too broad for our task because we need completed responses, not only saved drafts. Based on the details that matter to us, the tool is not a fully offline option. We should compare it with a paper backup before recommending it.

  1. Which one makes more sense for this internal rehearsal?
  2. Compared with the paper form, the QR form is faster to submit.
  3. The main advantage is that it does not require a personal device.
  4. The downside is that the data must be entered later.
  5. Because the time window is short, we need a faster option.
  6. On balance, the paper form is a better fit for this task.
