Lesson 47 — You Shouldn't Have Had to Ask

1. Before You Start

  • should have / shouldn't have / could have评价已经发生的行为;
  • 区分意图、实际影响和责任;
  • 道歉时不使用if you felt…把问题推回对方;
  • 说明本应采取的动作,并给出现在的纠正步骤;

2. Main Conversation

Responsibility before explanation

Aisha sends Priya the clarification from Lesson 46. Lena sees the reply and asks to speak with Aisha privately.

Part A — Naming what happened

Lena: Aisha, I read your reply to Priya. You shouldn't have had to ask her to separate the original poster from the extra graphics.

Aisha: I appreciate you saying that. I was surprised that the email sounded as if I had already agreed to a Friday deadline.

Lena: That happened because I wrote that you could probably adapt the poster into three launch graphics. I should have checked with you first.

Aisha: What did Priya know about the original agreement?

Lena: She knew you had offered one poster after the text and permissions were ready. I shouldn't have assumed that the extra versions would be a small extension.

Aisha: They may look related, but each version still needs final wording, sizing and review. Your message put me in an awkward position.

Lena: You're right. That was my mistake. I could have handled it differently by asking you privately before mentioning your name.

Aisha: I know your intention was to help the center plan, but the impact was an expectation that I had to correct.

Lena: Exactly. My intention doesn't remove that impact.

Part B — A specific apology and repair

Lena: What I should have done was tell Priya that only the poster was agreed and that any additional work needed a new conversation.

Aisha: Yes. I didn't need you to reject the request for me; I needed my availability not to be announced before I answered.

Lena: I'm sorry I spoke for you. Here's how I'll correct it: I'll email Priya today, state that the Friday graphics were never agreed, and take responsibility for creating that impression.

Aisha: Please copy me so the record is clear.

Lena: I will. I'll also ask future requesters to contact you directly rather than describing what you may be able to do.

Aisha: That would help. I still want to make the original poster once the approved material is ready.

Lena: Understood. I won't connect that commitment to any other deliverable.

Aisha: Thank you. I don't need a long explanation; I need the correction and a different process next time.

Lena: You'll have both. I'll send the correction before noon and forward you Priya's reply.

Aisha: Then we can move on without pretending the extra request was part of the original plan.

Check the story

  1. What statement by Lena created the false expectation?
  2. What did Priya already know about Aisha's commitment?
  3. Why are the extra versions not automatically a small extension?
  4. How does Aisha distinguish intention from impact?
  5. What two corrective actions does Lena promise?
  6. Does Aisha withdraw her original poster commitment?

Part B —

You shouldn't have had to ask

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Record Wording Information status
Lena's first note “Aisha can probably adapt the poster into three launch graphics by Friday.”
Aisha's clarification “I can't confirm the Friday request. Please separate it from the original poster.” Aisha
Lena's correction “The extra graphics were never agreed. I created that impression before checking with Aisha.”

  1. 事实:I spoke for you before checking.
  2. 影响:That put you in an awkward position.
  3. 责任:That was my mistake.
  4. 补救:I'll correct the record and change the process.

5. What People Actually Say

You shouldn't have had to ask / I should've checked with you是第一册已教词块,本课作语法深化;另有6项新的责任与补救词块。

1. I shouldn't have assumed that …

2. I could have handled that differently.

3. That put you in an awkward position.

4. My intention was …, but the impact was …

5. What I should have done was …

6. Here's how I'll correct it.

Don't Say It That Way

Sorry if you felt pressured. I'm sorry I spoke for you before checking.
I was only trying to help. My intention was to help, but the impact was an unwanted commitment.
Mistakes were made. I created the wrong expectation.
Let's forget it. Here's how I'll correct it.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

1. should have + past participle

I should have checked with you.
What I should have done was ask privately.

2. shouldn't have + past participle

I shouldn't have assumed that the work was minor.

3. could have + past participle

I could have handled that differently.

4. shouldn't have had to + verb

You shouldn't have had to ask for a correction.

If I had…, I would have…,也不要求推测无法确认的过去结果。

  1. I should have __________ with you first. (check)
  2. I shouldn't have __________ your availability. (assume)
  3. I could have __________ privately. (ask)
  4. You shouldn't have had to __________ the record. (correct)
  5. What I should have __________ was state the original scope. (do)

7. Sound Natural —

I should have checked with you.
That was MY mistake.
The impact was an expectation YOU had to correct.
Here's how I'll CORRECT it.

8. Practice

True / False / Not stated

  1. Aisha had promised three launch graphics.
  2. Lena mentioned Aisha's possible availability before checking.
  3. Priya knew nothing about the original poster.
  4. Aisha says Lena intended to harm her work.
  5. Lena will correct the record before noon.
  6. Aisha keeps the one-poster commitment.

  1. I described your availability before asking you.
  2. That made the requester expect a Friday delivery.
  3. I shouldn't have assumed the work was already agreed.
  4. I'll send a correction and copy you.

  1. Sorry if you misunderstood.
  2. I was only helping.
  3. The wrong deadline was sent.
  4. Anyway, it's fixed now.

D. Lesson 30

  1. things / different
  2. more time
  3. clear instructions
  4. current reality
  5. one action available
  6. one limit + one controllable step

A必须:

  • 不争论动机;
  • 使用两个情态完成式;
  • 提出一个可验证补救;

  • 准确说明自己做了什么;
  • 更正错误预期;
  • 说明影响;
  • 承担责任,不使用if you felt
  • 给出当日补救和未来流程;

9. Make It Yours

What I did / Impact / What I should have done / Repair now

Hi Priya and Aisha, I need to correct my earlier note. I said Aisha could probably adapt the poster into three launch graphics by Friday before I had checked with her. Those extra graphics were never agreed; Aisha's existing volunteer commitment remains one poster after the approved text and permissions are ready. My message created a deadline that Aisha then had to correct. I shouldn't have assumed that related designs were already within scope. I'm sorry I spoke for her. Please remove the Friday expectation. In future, I will ask Aisha privately before describing her availability, and additional deliverables will require a separate conversation with her.

  1. You shouldn't have had to ask.
  2. I shouldn't have assumed that you were available.
  3. I could have handled that differently.
  4. That put you in an awkward position.
  5. My intention was to help, but the impact was an expectation.
  6. What I should have done was ask you privately first.
  7. Here's how I'll correct it.

11. Self-check

  • 我能避免Sorry if you felt…
