Lesson 46 — I Wish Things Were Different

我真希望现实不是这样

本课只有一个现实任务：表达与当前事实不同的愿望，同时把注意力转回一个自己能够采取的现实步骤。

本课目标

学完本课，你能够：

  • 用wish + past和if only表达当前不真实或难以改变的愿望；
  • 把愿望、当前事实和可行动部分分开；
  • 不把“我希望……”误说成已制定计划；
  • 接受现实限制，同时提出一个可执行步骤；
  • 写一则既诚实又不消极的边界说明。

本课边界

本课只处理现在的愿望，不展开过去后悔或wish + would。愿望可以真实表达情绪，却不能改变预算、时间和已确认范围。Aisha仍只承诺一张海报；额外图形尚未接受。

2. Main Conversation

A wish is not a plan

The next morning, Aisha has drafted a factual reply to Priya but has not sent it. Daniel notices that she is still frustrated.

Part A — Naming the wish and the facts

Daniel: You look as if you've rewritten that message several times.

Aisha: I have. I wish things were different. I want to help with the exhibition, but every extra request seems to arrive as an urgent favor.

Daniel: What do you wish were different exactly?

Aisha: I wish community projects had a realistic design budget from the beginning. I also wish I had more free time this week.

Daniel: Those wishes make sense, but what is the present reality?

Aisha: The center hasn't confirmed a budget for the extra graphics, my client work is already scheduled, and the exhibition text still isn't final.

Daniel: So wishing doesn't mean that you can safely promise Friday.

Aisha: Right. If only the request were smaller and the wording were ready, I could assess it quickly. But neither condition is true.

Daniel: What part can you change?

Aisha: I can't create more time or approve the center's budget, but I can make my current capacity clear.

Part B — Turning the wish into one step

Daniel: What would that look like in the reply?

Aisha: The reality is that I can still make the original poster after the approved text and permissions arrive. I can't take on three additional graphics by Friday.

Daniel: Can you offer anything that doesn't quietly expand the work?

Aisha: What I can do is review a separate written brief next week. If there is a realistic deadline and budget, I can decide then.

Daniel: That sounds different from saying, “Maybe I'll squeeze it in.”

Aisha: Much different. I wish I could say yes to every useful project, but I can only promise work that I have actually assessed.

Daniel: Does your reply need to solve Priya's Friday problem?

Aisha: No. I can acknowledge it and suggest that the center use an existing neutral template if it needs something before a new agreement.

Daniel: Let's compare the options by honesty and workload. Which is the best fit?

Aisha: Based on those criteria, the best fit is a clear no to Friday, plus an offer to review a separate brief next week. The downside is that Priya must find another short-term solution.

Daniel: And your actionable step?

Aisha: Send the clarification today. My wishes explain how I feel; the message will explain what I can actually do.

5. What People Actually Say

1. I wish things were different.

要是……就好了。比I wish情绪更强，宜少量使用，不能代替实际回应。

形式像过去，意义指现在与事实不同。

2. were作为稳妥形式

I wish the request were smaller.
If only the wording were ready.

在此结构中，教材统一使用were。真实口语里也可能听到was，但本课不要求比较语域。

3. could表示当前能力或可能

I wish I could assess it quickly.

事实是她现在无法在信息不全时快速评估。

4. wish与hope

I wish I had more time now.
I hope the final wording arrives tomorrow.

wish指当前反事实；hope指未来仍可能发生。

愿望后短暂停顿，再说现实或行动，能防止整段听起来只有抱怨。can与can't必须清楚对比。

D. Lesson 44第二次近距离检索

用新情境完成：

  1. 说明当前安排不够合适。
  2. 提议按诚实度和工作量比较回复方式。

  3. 要是任务说明已经完整就好了。

选择一个目前不理想但风险较低的情况。说出：

  • 两个愿望；
  • 三个事实；
  • 一个不能改变的限制；
  • 两个能采取的动作；

现实行动

完成那个第一步，例如问清信息、提出新日期或写下范围。教材不要求事情马上得到理想结果，只检查行动是否真实可控。

不看原稿，用wish / hope / plan各说两句。若仍混淆，重做第3与第5部分。
