Lesson 35 — She Said She'd Call

1. Before You Start

  • 转述别人说过的一项事实或计划;
  • 转述一般疑问句和特殊疑问句,不保留直接问句语序;
  • saidtold measkedwanted to know 区分陈述与问题;
  • 说明信息来自语音留言或文字消息;

  • pass something on 转告某事

2. Main Conversation

One message, three careful listeners

Grace finds Daniel and Lena at Harbor Street Arts Center. She has just listened to a voicemail from a former neighborhood resident, Mrs. Flores.

Part A — What the caller actually said

Grace: Daniel, did you get my message? I've just sent you a short summary.

Daniel: I haven't seen it yet. My phone was on silent. What happened?

Grace: Mrs. Flores left me a voicemail about the old bicycle-shop photograph. She said she'd call again after six. She told me that she was interested in talking about the people in the picture.

Daniel: That's encouraging. Did she approve the photograph for the exhibit?

Grace: No. According to her message, she wanted to speak with her brother first. She asked whether we were still collecting short stories, and she wanted to know when you were free this week.

Daniel: So she expressed interest, but she didn't give us permission to display anything.

Grace: Exactly. She also said that the original photograph belonged to her brother, not to her.

Part B — Passing it on without changing it

Lena: Sorry, I caught only the last part. What did she ask?

Daniel: She asked whether we were still collecting stories. She also wanted to know when I was free this week.

Lena: And she said we could use the photograph after she spoke with her brother?

Grace: Not quite. She said she was interested in talking. She didn't promise permission after that conversation.

Lena: Thanks for correcting me. I'll pass that on to Aisha so she knows not to include the photograph when she starts the poster draft.

Daniel: Good. Tell her that the photo is still only a candidate.

Grace: Before that, could one of you answer Mrs. Flores's questions? She asked if we were still collecting stories.

Lena: Yes, up to six short stories for the first stage.

Daniel: And I'm free Thursday between four and five. I'll call her then if that works for her.

Grace: I'll send that reply now. I'll say that we're still collecting stories, that you're available Thursday, and that no image will be displayed without the owner's permission.

Lena: Perfect. The message stays accurate, and the boundary stays clear.

After the conversation, Lena sends Aisha an accurate update. Aisha replies that she will wait for confirmed wording and permissions before starting the poster draft, as previously agreed. Grace says she is willing to bring an internal review copy the following Tuesday and includes that offer in her reply. Mrs. Flores confirms both a Thursday call with Daniel and the Tuesday visit. Nobody grants public-display permission.

Check the story

  1. Who left Grace a voicemail?
  2. What was Mrs. Flores interested in doing?
  3. What two things did she ask about?
  4. Who owns the original photograph?
  5. What incorrect conclusion does Lena almost pass on?
  6. What three points will Grace include in her reply?
  7. What is arranged after the conversation, and what remains unconfirmed?

Part B —

She said she'd call 中的 she'dshe would,表示从过去的留言时点看将要发生的事。转述 asked whether...

4. Listen, Notice, Understand

Hi, this is Carla from Riverton Home Repair calling for Ben. Our technician has had a schedule change, so she can come on Thursday between eight and ten instead of Friday afternoon. She asked whether someone over eighteen would be at home during that time. She also wanted to know if she should use the side entrance because of the work near the front steps. Please call us back by five today. If we don't hear from you, we'll keep the original Friday appointment. Thanks.

Carla from Riverton Home Repair called for Ben. She said …

5. What People Actually Say

1. She said she'd call.

这里的 she'dshe would

2. She told me that …

中性;told 后要有接收信息的人:me / Daniel / us

3. She asked if / whether …

4. She wanted to know …

中性、自然;适合转述 when / where / who / why / how 引导的问题,也可接 if / whether

5. According to her message, …

6. I'll pass that on.

7. Did you get my message?

8. I've just sent it.

9. I haven't seen it yet.

10. Let's make sure everyone agrees.

Don't Say It That Way

She said me that she'd call. She told me that she'd call. / She said that she'd call. say
She asked are we still collecting stories. She asked whether we were still collecting stories.
She wanted to know when was Daniel free. She wanted to know when Daniel was free. when后不倒装
She's interested, so we have permission. She said she was interested, but permission is still open.

6. Grammar Refresh —

1. 陈述:said 与 told

“I'm interested.”
She said (that) she was interested.
She told me (that) she was interested.

2. Yes / No问题:asked if / whether

“Are you still collecting stories?”
She asked if we were still collecting stories.

3. Wh-问题:wanted to know + 疑问词

“When is Daniel free?”
She wanted to know when Daniel was free.

保留 when / where / why / how,其后仍用陈述语序。

am / is → was
are → were
will → would

“I'll call after six.” → She said she would call after six.

  1. “I'm interested in the project.” → She said __________.
  2. “I'll call after six.” → She said __________.
  3. “Are you still collecting stories?” → She asked __________.
  4. “When is Daniel free?” → She wanted to know __________.
  5. “The photograph belongs to my brother.” → She told Grace __________.

7. Sound Natural —

She SAID / she'd CALL after SIX.
She ASKED / whether we were still collecting STORIES.
According to her MESSAGE / the photo still needs perMISSION.
I'll pass that ON / to LENA.

8. Practice

  1. Mrs. Flores gave permission to display the photograph.
  2. She was interested in talking about people in the picture.
  3. She asked whether the group was still collecting stories.
  4. The original photograph belongs to Grace.
  5. Lena notices and corrects her own inaccurate conclusion.
  6. Daniel is available on Thursday between four and five.

根据主对话,把每项标为 message / confirmed in the room / unsupported inference

  1. Mrs. Flores wants to speak with her brother first.
  2. The group is collecting up to six short stories.
  3. The photograph will definitely appear in the exhibit.
  4. Daniel is free Thursday between four and five.
  5. The owner has already approved public display.

  1. She said / told me that she was interested.
  2. She said me / told me that the photograph belonged to her brother.
  3. She asked if we were / were we still collecting stories.
  4. She wanted to know when Daniel was / was Daniel free.
  5. “I'll call tonight.” → She said she __________ call that night.
  6. “Where is the meeting?” → He wanted to know where __________.

  • According to the message, …
  • 一项陈述;
  • 两个间接问句;
  • 回复期限;

  1. Give a clear starting point for a story about a missed call.
  2. State what you first believed about an unfamiliar number.
  3. Introduce a call that arrived a few minutes after the message.
  4. Say the meeting had ended when you arrived.
  5. Introduce the real explanation you discovered later.
  6. Move back to an action completed before the caller left the message.

F. Lesson 25

  1. Confirm whether Lena received your update.
  2. Say you sent the revised note a moment ago.
  3. Say you replied before the present conversation.
  4. Say you still have not seen the attachment.
  5. Politely ask someone to inspect the spam folder.
  6. Decide now to resend the message.

  • 信息来源;
  • Mrs. Flores明确说过的兴趣和原件归属;
  • 她提出的两个问题;
  • Daniel可联系的时间;
  • 海报目前不能使用该照片的许可边界;

9. Make It Yours

Hi Aisha, according to Mrs. Flores's voicemail, she's interested in talking about the people in the bicycle-shop photo. She said the original belongs to her brother, so she has not given us permission to display it. She asked whether we're still collecting short stories and when Daniel is free. We are collecting up to six stories, and Daniel can call Thursday between four and five. Please confirm that you've seen this update, and wait for the wording and permissions before starting the poster draft. I'll pass on any permission decision separately.
