Lesson 31 — I Was Only Kidding
1. Before You Start
- 识别笑声、夸张或立即解释等明确玩笑信号;
- 不确定时直接询问对方是否认真;
- 说明自己原先怎样理解那句话;
- 用 only / just 解释原意,但不否定对方感受;
- take over 接管
- clear up 澄清
- responsibility 责任
2. Main Conversation
A joke sounded like a real request
Grace helps Owen label three storage boxes at Corner Table Café.
Part A — Checking the meaning
Owen: These labels are much clearer than mine. At this rate, you can take over the whole café next week.
Grace: Are you serious? I can help with the boxes, but I don't want to manage the café.
Owen: No, I was only kidding. I meant you're much better at organizing labels than I am.
Grace: I thought you meant you wanted me to cover more work. You asked me about the front counter last month, so it sounded possible.
Owen: Did it sound as if I had already made the decision for you?
Grace: Yes, and that was the part I wanted to check.
Owen: I didn't realize it sounded like a real request. That came out wrong.
Part B — Explaining and repairing
Grace: I don't mind a joke. I just need to know when a real responsibility is being offered.
Owen: That's fair. I should've made the exaggeration clearer, or explained it immediately.
Grace: Thanks for clearing that up.
Owen: And to be completely clear: I'm not asking you to manage anything. I'm only thanking you for fixing the labels.
Grace: Good. Then I'll finish this last box, and you can keep your café.
Owen: Now that one sounded like a joke.
Grace: It was—and I smiled before I said it.
They finish the boxes with no change to Grace's role. In the last box, Grace notices several old photographs from the former bookshop, but no plan has been proposed yet.

Part B —
翻译提示:I was only kidding 是“我只是在开玩笑”。That came out wrong
4. Read, Notice, Understand
A. Three levels of clarity
| Line | Clear joke signal? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “You can take over the whole café next week.” | unclear in context | Ask: Are you serious? |
| “Sure, and I'll finish all 300 boxes before lunch!” (laughs, then explains) | clear exaggeration plus explanation | Respond if comfortable; still ask if unsure |
| “I need you to cover the counter at two.” | clear practical request | Confirm availability and responsibility |
B. Intention and effect
Intention: Owen wanted to praise Grace's organization.
Effect: Grace heard a possible work request.
C. Old photographs note
Box 3: labels, receipts, several photographs from the former bookshop. Keep together; ownership and permission not checked.
5. What People Actually Say
1. I was only kidding.
2. Are you serious?
3. I thought you meant …
4. I didn't realize it sounded like …
5. That came out wrong.
6. Thanks for clearing that up.
7. I meant …
8. I just need to know …
9. To be completely clear, …
10. That sounded like a joke.
Don't Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| Can't you take a joke? | I didn't realize it sounded like a real request. |
| It was just a joke, so forget it. | I was only kidding. I meant to praise your organization. |
| Obviously I wasn't serious. | I can see why it sounded possible. |
| Fine, no more jokes ever. | I just need real responsibilities to be stated clearly. |
6. Grammar Refresh — only与just收窄原意
1. only kidding / just joking
I was only kidding.
I was just joking.
2. only / just不能删除影响
I was only kidding, but I can see why it sounded serious.
3. I thought you meant …
I thought you meant you needed me to work next week.
It sounded like a real request.
It sounded like you had already decided.
- I was only __________. (kid)
- Are you __________?
- I thought you __________ you needed help tomorrow.
- I didn't realize it sounded __________ a complaint.
- Thanks for clearing that __________.
7. Sound Natural —
Are you SERIOUS?
You'll finish THREE HUNDRED BOXES before lunch?
I was only KIDDING. / I meant the labels look professional.
8. Practice
- Owen seriously offers Grace the café manager role.
- A past counter request makes the joke sound possible.
- Owen meant to criticize Grace's labels.
- Grace says she dislikes every kind of joke.
- Grace's café role remains unchanged.
- The old photographs are already approved for public display.
- I wanted to praise your presentation.
- It sounded like you were canceling the project.
- That came out wrong. I meant the first slide was very detailed.
- 不确定对方是否认真:__________
- 说明自己的原理解:__________
- 承认句子听起来像真实要求:__________
- 解释清楚后结束误会:__________
伙伴A抽取 serious request / obvious exaggeration / unclear mixed signal。
- Ask for a short conversation about a changed shared plan.
- Say you feel excluded when decisions are announced before discussion.
- Introduce the concrete sequence of events.
- State that you need both people to check the calendar first.
- Clarify that you are not asking the other person to cancel every plan.
- Say that one specific advance message would help.
不能只写 I was joking。
9. Make It Yours
