Lesson 17 — Is This Seat Taken?
1. Before You Start
- 询问座位或空间是否可用;
- 用 Can I / Could I / Do you mind if I …? 请求许可;
- 回应别人的许可请求;
- 用当下共同看得到的情况开启安全的小话题;
- Do you mind if I sit here? No, go ahead?
- get off 下车
- get back to 回去继续做某事
2. Main Conversation
A short conversation on the train
Grace boards a regional train with a book. Most seats are full. She sees an open aisle seat beside a passenger named Nora.
Part A — Asking permission
Grace: Excuse me, is this seat taken?
Nora: No, it's free.
Grace: Do you mind if I sit here?
Nora: Not at all. Go ahead. I'll move my bag.
Grace: Thank you. Could I put my coat above us?
Nora: Sure. There's plenty of space.
Nora: Is the aisle seat comfortable enough? This part of the train is a little narrow.
Grace: It's fine, thanks. I'll keep my small bag under the seat so it doesn't block the aisle.
Grace: It's busier than usual today.
Nora: It is. I think a conference is starting downtown.
Grace: That explains all the suitcases.
Nora: I take this train twice a week, and I can usually find an empty row.
Grace: The last time I took it was last month. The later morning service is normally quieter.
Nora: I guess everyone had the same idea today.
Part B — Two more turns, then a close
Nora: Are you getting off at Central Station too?
Grace: Yes. I'm meeting a friend near the west entrance. How about you?
Nora: I'm changing there for the airport line.
Grace: Then you have one more train after this.
Nora: Unfortunately, yes.
Grace: Well, I'll let you get back to your podcast.
Nora: And I'll let you get back to your book. It was nice talking with you.
Grace: You too. Have a good trip.
Nora: Thanks. You too.
The conversation stays connected to the train, the station and what both people can observe. Neither person asks for private contact information.
At Central Station, Grace gets off and meets her friend at the west entrance as planned. The trip does not create a later promise.

Part B —
翻译提示:Is this seat taken? I'll let you get back to...
4. Read, Notice, Understand
A. Read three public signs
TRAIN: Priority seats must be offered to passengers who need them.
CLINIC: Please keep phone calls outside the waiting area.
LIBRARY: Shared tables are available. Do not leave bags on empty chairs.
- A bag is on a library chair, but its owner is sitting beside it.
- You need to take a call in the clinic waiting area.
- You are using a priority seat and a passenger who needs it boards.
B. Permission is not the same as ownership
Is this seat taken? Do you mind if I sit here?
C. Safe small talk
5. What People Actually Say
1. Is this seat taken?
2. Do you mind if I sit here?
允许时常回答 No, go ahead。
3. Go ahead.
4. It's busier than usual today.
5. I'll let you get back to …
6. Have a good trip.
7. Could I put my bag here?
8. Not at all.
用于回答 Do you mind …?,后接 Go ahead 可减少歧义。
9. Are you getting off at …?
10. It was nice talking with you.
Don't Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| Move your bag. | Is this seat taken? |
| Can I? | Do you mind if I sit here?
| Yes. (表示允许) | No, not at all. Go ahead.
| Where do you live exactly? | It's busier than usual today. |
6. Grammar Refresh —
1. Can I …?
Can I leave my bag here for a minute?
2. Could I …?
比 Can I 稍柔和:
Could I open the window?
3. Do you mind if I + 现在时 …?
Do you mind if I sit here?
No, not at all. Go ahead. 允许
I'm sorry, someone's sitting there.
- __________ this seat taken?
- Do you mind if I __________ here? (sit)
- Could I __________ my suitcase beside yours? (put)
- Give clear permission: “No, not at all. __________.”
- Decline because a friend is returning: “I'm sorry, __________.”
7. Sound Natural — Excuse me与许可语调
Excuse me— / is this SEAT TAKEN?
Do you mind if I SIT HERE?
NO, not at all. / GO AHEAD.
8. Practice
- Grace asks for a window seat.
- Nora's bag is on the open seat.
- They discuss a visible feature of the train.
- Grace asks for Nora's address.
- Nora must change trains at Central Station.
- Both people return to their own activity.
写 F(询问事实)或 P(请求许可)。
- Is anyone sitting here?
- Could I charge my phone here?
- Is this locker in use?
- Do you mind if I open the window?
- You phone a repair shop. Open by identifying that the call concerns your existing booking.
- You cannot attend the original booking. Ask to change it rather than cancel it.
- Ask whether the shop has any open time after 4:00 p.m.
9. Make It Yours
