Lesson 11 — You Should Come With Us

1. Before You Start

  • should 热情地建议朋友参加活动;
  • could 提出一个可选择的参加方式;
  • might 表示尚未确定的可能性,而不让对方误以为你已经答应;
  • 接受邀请,或用简短理由自然婉拒;
  • 对朋友、熟悉的同事和不太熟悉的人选择合适语气;

2. Main Conversation

A Sunday concert

Aisha and Lena met briefly at a workshop and recently ran into each other again while Daniel was visiting the arts center. On Thursday evening, they are talking with him outside Maple Court about a free outdoor concert on Sunday.

Part A — The invitation

Aisha: Lena and I are going to an outdoor concert on Sunday. You should come with us.

Daniel: I'd love to, but I have a project due Monday morning.

Lena: You could join us later. The music starts at six, but it goes until nine.

Daniel: I might be able to come after I finish the first draft. Where is it?

Aisha: On the lawn behind the Harbor Street Arts Center. Would you like to join us if you're free?

Daniel: I'd like to. Let me see if I can get most of the work done on Saturday.

Lena: No pressure. We just need a clear answer before we leave on Sunday.

Daniel: That's fair. I'll message you by three on Sunday afternoon.

Aisha: Perfect. And if work takes longer, maybe another time.

Part B — A clear answer

At 2:40 on Sunday afternoon, Daniel sends a group message.

Daniel: Hi, you two. I'm afraid I can't make it tonight. The project is taking longer than I expected, and I don't want to arrive for only the last few minutes.

Aisha: No problem. Thanks for letting us know before we leave.

Lena: Absolutely. Maybe another time.

Daniel: Thanks for understanding. I hope you have a great evening.

Aisha: Thanks. Good luck with the project.

That evening, Aisha and Lena go to the concert as planned, while Daniel stays home to work. Daniel has given them a clear answer, so nobody is waiting for another message.

You should come with us I might be able to come

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Check the story

  1. What are Aisha and Lena planning to attend?
  2. Why doesn't Daniel accept immediately?
  3. What optional plan does Lena suggest?
  4. Does I might be able to come mean Daniel has accepted?
  5. By what time does Daniel promise to give a clear answer?
  6. What final answer does he send, and is his promise closed?

5. What People Actually Say

1. You should come with us.

We're going to the night market. You should come with us.

2. You could join us later.

You could meet us after dinner.

3. I might be able to …

I might be able to come after seven. I'll let you know by noon.

4. I'd love to, but …

I'd love to, but I already have plans.

5. Let me see if I can …

Let me see if I can move one appointment. I'll tell you this afternoon.

6. I'm afraid I can't make it.

I'm afraid I can't make it on Friday.

7. Maybe another time.

I can't make it this week. Maybe another time.

8. Would you like to join us?

You should come with us 更适合不太熟悉的人。

A few of us are having lunch. Would you like to join us?

9. No pressure.

Let me know tomorrow. No pressure.

10. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm sorry you can't come, but thanks for letting me know.

Don't Say It That Way

I maybe come. I might be able to come. maybe
I might come, so count me in. I might be able to come. I'll confirm by noon. might 不是确认参加
I cannot join your activity. I'm afraid I can't make it.
I don't want. I'd love to, but I already have plans.

6. Grammar Refresh — should、could与might

You should come with us.
You should try the afternoon class.

You could join us later.
We could meet near the entrance.

I might come after seven.
Lena might bring a friend.

When can you let me know?

I'll confirm by three.

You should come
You could join
I might arrive

You should come.
She might join us.

不要写成 should to comeshe might joins

选择 should、couldmight。

  1. I strongly think this event would be fun for you. You __________ come with us.
  2. You cannot arrive at six, but arriving at seven is one possible plan. You __________ join us later.
  3. I have not checked my work schedule, so I __________ be able to come.
  4. We do not have to meet at the gate; the café is another option. We __________ meet there.
  5. Nina has not answered yet. She __________ come, but we don't know.
  6. This band is one of your favorites. You really __________ see them live.

7. Sound Natural —

You should COME with us.
You should see this BAND.

You SHOULD come with us.
You should COME with us.

I MIGHT be able to come … / I'll confirm by three.

  1. You should come with us.
  2. You could join us after dinner.
  3. I might be able to come, but I'll confirm tomorrow.

8. Practice

  1. The concert is on Saturday.
  2. Daniel has work due on Monday morning.
  3. Lena says Daniel must arrive before six.
  4. Daniel's first answer is a definite yes.
  5. Daniel promises to send a clear answer by three on Sunday.
  6. He sends his refusal before the promised time.

B. should、could还是might

  1. This book club is very friendly. You __________ come with me next week.
  2. If six is too early, you __________ meet us at seven.
  3. I have to check whether I am working, so I __________ be able to join you.
  4. We __________ sit outside, or we can get a table inside.
  5. Marta has another appointment. She __________ arrive late.
  6. You love old photographs. You __________ visit this exhibit.

  1. You should come to the picnic. ___
  2. You could take the later bus. ___
  3. I might be free after eight. ___
  4. We could have coffee instead. ___
  5. Sam might join us. ___
  6. You should meet Lena. ___

I'd love to, but · Let me see if I can · I'm afraid I can't make it · Maybe another time · Thanks for letting me know

  1. “____________________ I already have plans on Sunday.”
  2. “____________________ finish the report tonight. I'll confirm tomorrow morning.”
  3. “____________________ this evening. I have to work late.”
  4. “I won't be free this weekend. ____________________.”
  5. A: “I can't join you tonight.” B: “No problem. ____________________.”

    • a. You should come with us.
    • b. Your attendance is requested.

    • a. You have to come with us.
    • b. Would you like to join us?

    • a. I'd love to, but I already have plans.
    • b. No.

    • a. Great, I'll buy your ticket now.
    • b. When can you let me know for sure?

    • a. Thanks for letting me know.
    • b. Are you sure? You really should change your plans.

Invitation
A few of us are going to the Riverside food market on Saturday at 11:00. Would you like to join us? Please tell me by Friday evening because I need to reserve a table for lunch.

Reply 1 — Jordan
Yes, I can come. I'd love to join you.

Reply 2 — Priya
I might be able to join you after noon. Let me check one appointment, and I'll give you a definite answer by Friday at four.

Reply 3 — Alex
I'm afraid I can't make it on Saturday. Thanks for inviting me, and maybe another time.

回答:

  1. Who has definitely accepted?
  2. Who has definitely declined?
  3. Whose answer is still uncertain?
  4. When will that person give a definite answer?
  5. Why does the organizer need answers by Friday evening?
  6. Can the organizer treat Priya as confirmed yet? Why or why not?

  • 先积极回应邀请;
  • 明确表示目前还不确定;
  • 说明你何时会给最终答复;

  • they need a final answer two hours earlier;
  • the activity will start one hour later;
  • no reservation is needed after all.

H. Delayed retrieval from Lesson 9

Close Lesson 9 and do not look at its expression list. Read each new situation once and begin speaking within five seconds. There is no phrase bank, Chinese translation, target wording or first-letter cue.

  1. Check whether a familiar coworker's Tuesday lunch period is open.
  2. Find out whether a friend already has something scheduled for Saturday morning.
  3. Wednesday is impossible. Offer Thursday as the replacement.
  4. You both agree on six o'clock at the station. State the agreed time and place in one short sentence.
  5. The time changed, but you hope to keep the west entrance. Check whether that unchanged location is acceptable.
  6. The Sunday eleven-o'clock arrangement is complete. End the exchange with a short, friendly closing.

9. Make It Yours

  1. 发出邀请,再切换角色回应;
  2. 在两边的台词中使用 should / could / might 中适合情境的至少两项;
  3. 如果不能立刻确定,给出明确回复时间;

Choose one relationship without telling me first: close friend, familiar coworker, or new neighbor. Invite me to a simple social activity. After my first reply, randomly add one change: a later start, a ticket deadline, or a different day. Do not write my lines for me. If I only say I might come, ask when I can confirm. Continue until I give a definite answer and you respond naturally.

  1. 用一句话热情邀请熟悉的朋友;
  2. 为无法准时到场的人提供一个可选方案;
  3. 说一句不确定答复,并补充确认时间;
  4. 分别对朋友和熟悉的同事作一次自然婉拒;

I'd love to join you for board games on Saturday afternoon, but I need to check a family plan first. I might be able to come, but please don't include me in the final number yet. Let me see if I can check everything tonight. I'll send you a definite answer by ten tomorrow morning.

Thanks—that later start works for me. I've checked the family plan, and I can definitely come. Please include me in the final number. What time would you like me to arrive?

H. Lesson 9

  1. Are you free Tuesday at lunchtime?
  2. Do you have any plans for Saturday morning?
  3. How about Thursday instead?
  4. Let's make it six o'clock at the station.
  5. Does the west entrance still work for you?
  6. See you then.

Make It Yours参考

Friend: We're going to an outdoor movie on Saturday. You should come with us.
Me: I'd love to, but my family might need my help that afternoon.
Friend: You could join us after dinner. The movie doesn't start until eight.
Me: That might work. Let me see if I can change the family plan. I'll confirm by noon.
Me, later: I'm afraid I can't make it. My family needs my help until nine. Maybe another time.
Friend: No problem. Thanks for letting me know.

11. Self-check
