Lesson 12 — I Owe You One
1. Before You Start
- 先询问对方是否方便,再提出一个清楚的小请求;
- 简要说明事情怎么发生、现在需要什么;
- 接受请求,或说明限制并给出替代方案;
- 自然感谢别人,并回应对方的感谢;
2. Main Conversation
A small problem on the way to a picnic
A week later, Lena, Aisha and Daniel are meeting for a picnic at Riverside Park at 3:30 on Sunday. At 3:20, Lena calls Daniel.
Part A — Asking for help
Lena: Hi, Daniel. Could you do me a favor?
Daniel: Sure. What's up?
Lena: I was walking to Riverside Park when one of my paper bags tore. Nothing broke, but I'm holding fruit, cups and two containers. I could really use your help.
Daniel: Of course. Where are you?
Lena: At the bus stop on Pine Street, near the pharmacy. Could you bring an empty tote bag?
Daniel: No problem. I can do that. I'm leaving now.
Lena: Thanks. Aisha might get to the park before us. Would you mind texting her? Tell her we're running about ten minutes late.
Daniel: I'll text her now. We could ask her to save a table.
Lena: Good idea. I really appreciate it.
Daniel: Happy to help. I should be there in five minutes. Let me know if you need anything else.
Lena: The bag is all I need. See you soon.
Part B — Closing the favor
At the picnic:
Aisha: I'm glad you made it. I was setting out the food when Daniel's message arrived.
Lena: Thanks for waiting. And Daniel, thanks for helping me out. I owe you one.
Daniel: Don't worry about it. Carrying a tote bag for one block isn't a major rescue.
Aisha: It looked important from the message.
Lena: It was important. Next time, I'm going to pack everything in one tote bag.
Daniel: Good plan. I'm glad the apples made it.
Aisha: And our table. The new plan worked.
The three of them finish the picnic as planned. Daniel does not treat I owe you one as a literal debt, and no further favor is promised.
Don't worry about it 或 Happy to help 结束。
4. Read, Notice, Understand
Check the story
- What happened while Lena was walking to the park?
- What does she ask Daniel to bring?
- Why does Daniel need to text Aisha?
- What does Daniel suggest asking Aisha to do?
- How does Lena thank Daniel at the picnic?
- Does Daniel expect a specific favor in return?
5. What People Actually Say
1. Could you do me a favor?
Could you do me a favor and hold this for a minute?
2. What's up?
对正式联系人可改用 How can I help?。
A: Could I ask you something?
B: Sure. What's up?
3. I could really use your help.
I could really use your help moving this table.
4. No problem. I can do that.
A: Could you send Mia the new address?
B: No problem. I can do that.
5. I really appreciate it.
I really appreciate your help.
6. Thanks for helping me out.
Thanks for helping me out with the boxes.
7. I owe you one.
Thanks for bringing my keys. I owe you one.
8. Happy to help.
A: I really appreciate it.
B: Happy to help.
9. Don't worry about it.
It only took a minute. Don't worry about it.
10. Let me know if you need anything else.
I'll be here until five. Let me know if you need anything else.
Don't Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| Help me. | Could you do me a favor? |
| I need you to come now. | I could really use your help. Are you free? |
| Now I have a debt to you. | I owe you one. |
| No thanks. | Don't worry about it. / Happy to help. |
6. Grammar Refresh —
I'm leaving now.
I'll text Aisha now.
Next time, I'm going to pack everything in one tote bag.
- 已经确定、马上执行的安排可用现在进行时;
- 听到新情况后当场作出的决定用 will;
I was walking to the park when the bag tore.
I was setting out the food when the message arrived.
Aisha might arrive first.
We could ask her to save a table.
只有 Could you help?
Could you bring an empty tote bag to the Pine Street bus stop?
Would you mind telling Aisha we'll be ten minutes late?
- Lena __________ to the park when the bag tore. (walked / was walking)
- Daniel decides during the call: “I __________ her now.” (will text / am texting every day)
- The picnic time is already fixed: “We __________ at 3:30.” (are meeting / might meeting)
- Aisha may arrive first: “She __________ get there before us.” (might / is supposed)
- Daniel offers one possible solution: “We __________ ask her to save a table.” (could / have to)
- Complete the polite form: “Would you mind __________ her?” (text / texting)
7. Sound Natural — I owe you one
在 I owe you one 中,信息重点通常落在 OWE 或整组 OWE YOU ONE 上;you 在自然语流中会变轻:
I OWE you one.
Thanks—I OWE YOU ONE.
Could you bring an empty TOTE BAG?
I really APPRECIATE it.
Thanks for HELPING ME OUT.
- Could you do me a favor? / Could you bring a tote bag?
- I really appreciate it. / Thanks for helping me out.
- I owe you one. / Don't worry about it.
8. Practice
- Lena's food containers break when the bag tears.
- Lena is waiting near a pharmacy on Pine Street.
- Daniel refuses because he is too far away.
- Daniel tells Aisha that he and Lena will be late.
- Aisha is already setting out food when she receives the message.
- Daniel asks Lena to repay him with a specific favor.
Could you do me a favor? · I could really use your help. · I really appreciate it. · Thanks for helping me out. · I owe you one. · Happy to help.
- Before giving the details, ask whether a friend can help: “__________”
- Explain that the help would matter: “The boxes are too heavy for one person. __________”
- Thank someone immediately after they agree: “__________”
- Thank them again after the problem is solved: “__________”
- Use a friendly, nonliteral way to say you would gladly return a small favor: “__________”
- Respond warmly when someone thanks you: “__________”
- We __________ outside the park entrance at four. (present continuous: fixed arrangement)
- The bag __________ while Lena __________ to the park. (tear / walk)
- “I can't carry everything.” “I __________ bring an extra bag.” (decision now: will)
- Lena already intends to use a tote bag next time. She __________ pack everything in one bag. (be going to)
- Daniel __________ arrive before Lena, but he is not certain. (might)
- We __________ ask Aisha to save a table. (one possible option: could)
- You __________ come with us if you finish early. (warm suggestion: should)
No problem. I can do that. / You owe me.
Happy to help with everything. / I can help with one part, but I can't take over the whole week.
Thanks for helping me out. / You did your duty.
Don't worry about it. / You must return the favor tomorrow.
Hi Nora—my bus is stuck near Oak Avenue. I should arrive at 6:20, not 6:00. Could you tell Eli to meet me at the side entrance and start setting up six chairs? I already have the drinks, but we still need paper cups. I really appreciate it. —Sam
- 新到达时间;
- 应使用的入口;
- Eli现在需要做的任务;
- You want a close friend to visit a community garden with you on Sunday morning. Begin by checking whether that time is open.
- Before suggesting an after-work activity, find out whether your friend already has something scheduled for Wednesday evening.
- Six o'clock is impossible for both of you. Offer 7:30 as the replacement.
- You both agree on Thursday at six by the north entrance. State the agreed time and place in one short sentence.
- The departure time changed, but you hope to keep the north entrance as the meeting point. Check whether that unchanged place is acceptable.
- A Saturday ten-o'clock library visit is fully arranged. End the exchange with a brief, friendly closing.
- At a bus stop, your cousin and a coworker greet each other and share an old joke. You are surprised by their connection. React.
- Two guests at your dinner clearly recognize each other. Ask about the connection between them.
- Give a short answer: you first became acquainted at a neighborhood book club.
- You were comparing labels in a grocery store. During that background action, Sam picked up your wallet from the floor. Tell this in one sentence.
- A speaker has just said that a missing package finally arrived. Prompt the speaker to continue with the next event.
- End a story by explaining that both of you reached for the last umbrella and began talking.
- Your close friend enjoys plants, and your group is going to a neighborhood plant swap. Encourage the friend warmly to join the group.
- A friend cannot be at the start of a walking tour. Offer arriving after the first stop as an optional solution.
- You may need to stay home until noon. Say that joining the group for lunch is possible but not confirmed.
- You want to attend a picnic, but you have to drive your aunt to an appointment. Begin a warm refusal.
- You may be able to finish a repair early enough to attend. Say that you need time to check, then give four o'clock as the deadline for your answer.
- You definitely cannot attend on Sunday because you work an overnight shift. Give a polite, unambiguous refusal.
- You cannot join this weekend's hike, but you sincerely want to meet on a future occasion. Close your refusal with that idea.
9. Make It Yours
- 顺路带一件轻便物品;
- 转告一次时间或地点变化;
- 帮你看一下门牌、清单或消息;
- 先问对方是否方便帮忙;
- 用一句话说明问题怎么发生;
- 给出动作、地点和时间;
- 让对方接受、拒绝或提出限制;
- 根据限制调整安排;
- cannot arrive before the requested time;
- can do only one of the two tasks;
- needs the exact address;
- suggests asking a third person instead.
Give me one small, realistic favor to ask for. After I ask, randomly accept, decline, or accept with one limit. Do not tell me your choice in advance and do not write my sentences for me. Make me explain what happened, adjust the plan, and close with thanks.

Make It Yours
A: Could you do me a favor? I was walking to the station when the handle on my bag broke. Could you bring an empty tote bag to the west entrance?
A: I could really use your help.
B: I can help, but I won't be there for twenty minutes.
A: That's okay. I'll wait inside and text Sam about the delay. I really appreciate it.
A, later: Thanks for helping me out. I owe you one.
B: Happy to help.
Message 1: Hi Mia, could you do me a favor? I'm running about fifteen minutes late because my bus has stopped near Oak Street. Would you mind telling Leo to meet at the west entrance instead? I could really use your help. Please let me know if you can't reach him, and I'll call.
Message 2: Thanks for checking. The west entrance is at 48 Oak Street, beside the pharmacy. Please send Leo that address and ask him to wait inside at 6:15. I really appreciate your help. I'll call him myself if the message doesn't go through.
11. Self-check
