Lesson 7 — Could You Keep It Down?

1. Before You Start

  • 不带指责地说明噪声来自哪里、对你造成什么影响;
  • Could you…?Would you mind…? 提出清楚、礼貌的请求;
  • 听完对方的解释,再协商时间或做法;
  • 复述并确认一个具体约定;

  • come through the wall

2. Main Conversation

Music through the wall

It is 8:35 on Tuesday evening at Maple Court. Daniel can hear music through the shared wall, so he knocks on Aisha's door.

Daniel: Hi, Aisha. I'm sorry to bother you, but could you keep the music down a little?

Aisha: Oh, sure. Is it coming through the wall?

Daniel: Yes. The bass is pretty strong in my living room. I'm recording a short presentation for work around nine.

Aisha: I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was that loud. I'm checking the sound for an animation, and I put the speaker right against this wall.

Daniel: That explains it. Would you mind moving the speaker to the other side of the room?

Aisha: Not at all. I can put it on my desk. Could I play it quietly for another twenty minutes? I need to check two more sections.

Daniel: That should work. Is there any chance you could use headphones after nine?

Aisha: Yes. I have a wired pair somewhere. Let me make sure I've got this right: low volume until nine, then headphones.

Daniel: Exactly. And I'll message you if I can still hear it.

Aisha: Please do. Sorry about that.

Daniel: No problem. Thanks for understanding.

At 9:05, Aisha sends Daniel a message.

Aisha: I moved the speaker earlier, and I'm using headphones now. Can you still hear anything?

Daniel: No, it's quiet now. Thanks for sticking to the plan.

Aisha: Of course. I didn't want to make it harder for you to record.

Daniel: The recording is about to start, so the timing is perfect. Thanks, Aisha.

Aisha: You're welcome. Good luck with your presentation.

Not at all 回答 Would you mind…?

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Check the story

  1. What can Daniel hear in his living room?
  2. Why does he need less noise at nine?
  3. Why is Aisha playing the same sound more than once?
  4. What does Daniel ask Aisha to move?
  5. What is their agreement for the rest of the evening?
  6. How do they know the immediate change has worked?

5. What People Actually Say

I'm sorry to bother you, but…、Could you keep it down?、Would you mind + -ing?、The sound is coming through…、I didn't realize it was that loud、Is there any chance you could…?

Sorry about thatThat should work 按高频基础表达唤醒;Let me make sure I've got this right

1. I'm sorry to bother you, but …

I'm sorry to bother you, but there's a package blocking the stairs.

2. Could you keep it down?

We can hear the TV upstairs. Could you keep it down a little?

只说 Keep it down!

3. Would you mind + -ing?

Would you mind closing the door more quietly?

Not at all. / Of course. / Sure, I'll do that.

4. The sound is coming through …

The sound is coming through the ceiling.

5. I didn't realize it was that loud.

I didn't realize the washing machine was that loud downstairs.

6. Is there any chance you could …?

Is there any chance you could move the boxes away from the door?

7. Sorry about that.

I left the gate open. Sorry about that.

8. That should work.

If you can call after six, that should work.

9. Let me make sure I've got this right.

Let me make sure I've got this right: no deliveries through this entrance after five.

Don't Say It That Way

You are too noisy. The sound is coming through the wall.
Stop the music. Could you turn the music down a little?
You must use headphones. Could you use headphones after nine?
Yes, I mind. I'm sorry, but I need another ten minutes.

6. Grammar Refresh —

1. Could you + 动词原形 …?

Could you turn the TV down?
Could you move the chair away from the wall?

Could you turning…?

2. Would you + 动词原形 …?

Would you close the door quietly?

不过,Would you please keep it down?

3. Would you mind + 动词-ing …?

Would you mind moving the speaker?
Would you mind waiting until morning?

Would you mind to move…?

The bass is coming through the wall.
I'm recording something at nine.
Could you use headphones after nine?

  1. Could you __________ the front door more quietly? (close)
  2. Would you mind __________ the speaker away from the wall? (move)
  3. Would you __________ me before the repair person arrives? (text)
  4. Could you __________ the boxes inside tonight? (bring)
  5. Would you mind not __________ the washing machine after ten? (run)
  6. Is there any chance you could __________ for another fifteen minutes? (wait)

7. Sound Natural — Could you与Would you

  • Could you → /ˈkʊdʒə/
  • Would you → /ˈwʊdʒə/

Could / you / keep it down?
Could you / keep it down?
Could you keep it down?

Would / you / mind moving it?
Would you / mind moving it?
Would you mind moving it?

Could you TURN it DOWN a little?
Would you mind MOVING the SPEAKER?

Could you turn it down a little?,比较两者给人的感觉。

8. Practice

  1. Daniel goes to Aisha's door after nine o'clock.
  2. The bass can be heard through the shared wall.
  3. Aisha is playing music for a party.
  4. Daniel asks Aisha to stop all sound immediately.
  5. Aisha moves the speaker before she sends Daniel a message.
  6. Daniel confirms that he can no longer hear the bass.

I'm sorry to bother you, but · coming through the ceiling · Would you mind · I didn't realize · That should work

  1. A: ____________________ your music is quite loud in the hallway.
  2. A: The sound is ____________________.
  3. A: ____________________ putting the speaker on a shelf instead?
  4. B: Oh, ____________________ it was that loud.
  5. A: If you can turn it down after eight, ____________________.

  1. could / turn down / the television

  2. would you mind / move / the chair

  3. would / close / the gate quietly

  4. would you mind / not leave / bags in the hallway

  5. is there any chance / wait until eight

  1. ___ Could you move it away from the bedroom wall?
    ___ I have an early shift tomorrow.
    ___ I can hear the television in my bedroom.

  2. ___ Would you mind doing that after nine in the morning?
    ___ The drilling is coming through the ceiling.
    ___ I'm on a work call until then.

  • 明天早上六点起床;
  • 说清震动从哪里传来;
  • 请求对方今晚暂停机器;

Role B —

  • 洗衣机刚买来,不知道楼下能听见;
  • 这一轮还有十二分钟;
  • 可以今晚暂停,明天白天继续;

  • 声音或震动来自哪里;
  • 对你的具体影响;
  • 一个带时间或动作的礼貌请求;

  1. 表示自己听懂了解释;
  2. 接受方案,或提出一个合理调整;

  1. You're making too much noise. / The sound is coming through the wall.
  2. Stop moving furniture. / Would you mind moving the chairs tomorrow morning?
  3. Yes, I mind. / I'm sorry, but I need ten more minutes.
  4. Fine. / That should work. Thanks for letting me know.

9. Make It Yours

  • 晚间电视或音乐;
  • 清晨搬动椅子;
  • 公共走廊里的物品;
  • 关门声音;

  1. 用一句缓和的开场;
  2. 只说可观察到的问题,不评价对方人品;
  3. 说明一个具体影响;
  4. Could you…?Would you mind…? 提出请求;
  5. 为对方留下解释空间;
  6. 给出或接受一个替代方案;

  1. 在十秒内说出两种礼貌请求结构;
  2. Move the speaker 分别改成一个 Could you…? 请求和一个 Would you mind…? 请求;
  3. 用三句话完成“事实—影响—请求”;
  4. 回应一句 I didn't realize it was that loud,并提出一个具体约定;
  5. 重写第7部分F的消息,但换一个问题和时间;

A: Hi. I'm sorry to bother you, but I can hear a strong vibration from the washing machine upstairs. I have to get up at six tomorrow. Could you pause it for tonight?
B: Oh, I'm sorry. It's new, and I didn't realize you could hear it downstairs. This cycle has twelve minutes left, but I can pause it and finish tomorrow.
A: Thanks. Would you mind using it before nine thirty in the evening from now on?
B: That's fine. I'll also put a mat under it tomorrow.
A: Let me make sure I've got this right: you'll pause it now, finish tomorrow and use it before nine thirty in the future.
B: Exactly.

Hi, this is Sam from the apartment below. I'm sorry to bother you, but a strong vibration is coming through the ceiling, and I have an early start tomorrow. Would you mind pausing the washing machine tonight? Please let me know if there's a problem with that. Thanks.

Card A

“I didn't realize the chair was so loud downstairs. I can put felt pads under it this evening and stop moving it after eight.”

Card B

“The repair person can only come at 7:30 tomorrow morning. The drilling will take about ten minutes. Would 7:45 be any better?”

Card C

“I'm testing the alarm, not leaving it on. I need one more test at six this evening, and then I'm done.”

Card D

“My family is visiting tonight. We can move away from the shared wall now and finish dinner by ten.”

I understand. Starting at 7:45 would be better. Let me make sure I've got this right: the drilling will start at 7:45 and take about ten minutes.

  1. The sound is coming through the wall.
  2. Would you mind moving the chairs tomorrow morning?
  3. I'm sorry, but I need ten more minutes.
  4. That should work. Thanks for letting me know.

Make It Yours

I'm sorry to bother you, but the sound is coming through the wall. I have an early meeting tomorrow. Would you mind turning the television down after ten? I understand that you're watching a game, so low volume until it finishes should be okay. Let me make sure I've got this right: low volume now, and the television off at eleven. Thanks for understanding.

11. Self-check

  • 我能正确使用 Would you mind + 动词-ing
