Lesson 8 — That's Not What I Meant

1. Before You Start

  • 明确告诉对方“我不是那个意思”;
  • 用更具体的信息重新表达原意;
  • 检查自己现在是否理解正确;
  • 综合责任、数量和礼貌请求表达,形成一份清楚的新安排;

2. Main Conversation

Getting the room ready

The following weekend, Maya and Ben are getting their living room ready for another small get-together. Six people will be there in total. They thought they had divided the work, but they understood one task differently.

Part A — Two different meanings

Maya: I thought you were taking care of the living room.

Ben: I did. I vacuumed, put the books away, and cleaned the coffee table.

Maya: It looks great, but that's not what I meant. We still need places for six people to sit.

Ben: Oh. I thought “take care of the living room” meant clean it.

Maya: That's fair. Maybe I wasn't clear. What I meant was, could you set up the room for everyone?

Ben: So, are you saying we need two more chairs?

Maya: Exactly. Do we have any folding chairs in the closet?

Ben: We have one. I can bring in a chair from the desk, too.

Maya: That gives us six. Would you mind moving those boxes away from the window?

Ben: Not at all.

Part B — A clearer plan

Ben: Who's supposed to pick up the food—you or me?

Maya: Me. You don't have to do that. Let me put it another way: you set up the room and put the drinks in the fridge, and I'll pick up the food.

Ben: Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought I was picking up the food and you were getting the drinks.

Maya: Then my first message really wasn't clear.

Ben: Let me make sure I've got this right. I need to set up six seats, move the boxes, and put some water in the fridge. You're picking up the food.

Maya: Right. We only need a little ice, so I'll get that on my way back.

Ben: Good. I'll write it on the list this time.

Maya: Please do. “Take care of it” is not much of a list.

Later that afternoon, they follow the written list and finish the room, food, and drinks before the first guest arrives.

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Check the story

  1. What did Ben think “take care of the living room” meant?
  2. What had Maya actually wanted Ben to do?
  3. How do they find enough seats for six people?
  4. What does Maya ask Ben to move?
  5. Who is picking up the food?
  6. What three jobs does Ben repeat in the final plan?

5. What People Actually Say

That's not what I meant、What I meant was…、Maybe I wasn't clear、Let me put it another way、So, are you saying…?、Sorry, I misunderstood

Who's supposed to…?、Do we have any…?、Would you mind…?、Let me make sure I've got this right.

1. That's not what I meant.

That's not what I meant. I wasn't asking you to cancel.

2. What I meant was …

What I meant was, we need to leave before eight.

3. Maybe I wasn't clear.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I only need the first page today.

4. Let me put it another way.

Let me put it another way: the date can change, but the budget can't.

5. So, are you saying …?

So, are you saying we should wait until Monday?

6. Sorry, I misunderstood.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought the meeting was online.

7. Who's supposed to …?

Who's supposed to take the trash out tonight?

8. Do we have any …?

Do we have any clean towels?

9. Would you mind …?

Would you mind closing the window?

10. Let me make sure I've got this right.

Let me make sure I've got this right: you bring the food, and I'll bring the drinks.

Don't Say It That Way

You understood wrong. That's not what I meant. Let me explain.
You didn't listen to me. Maybe I wasn't clear.
I say it again. Let me put it another way.
So you don't want to help? So, are you saying you can't do it today?

6. Grammar Refresh —

That's not what I meant.
Sorry, I misunderstood.

I'm supposed to pick up the food.
You need to set up six seats.
We don't have to buy more plates.

责任表达后面必须跟清楚的动作,不能只说 take care of it

We need two more chairs.
Do we have any folding chairs?
We only need a little ice.

Would you mind moving the boxes?
Let me make sure I've got this right: six seats, some water, and no extra plates.

  1. The plan says Ben has this job: Ben (is supposed to / has any) move the boxes.
  2. There are no clean glasses: We (need to / would mind) wash some glasses.
  3. You want to know whether there are chairs: Do we have (any / much) folding chairs?
  4. Only a small amount of ice is necessary: We need (a little / a few) ice.
  5. Make a polite request: Would you mind (move / moving) the lamp?

7. Sound Natural —

I meant the FOLDING chairs, not the dining chairs.
We need TWO more seats, not four.
I said SATURDAY, not Sunday.

What I meant was…Let me put it another way…

What I meant was … / we need to leave by EIGHT.

  1. I meant the SIDE entrance, not the main entrance.
  2. We need A FEW plates, not a few cups.
  3. BEN is supposed to bring the drinks, not Maya.

8. Practice

  1. Ben thought his job was to clean the living room.
  2. Maya says Ben did a poor job cleaning.
  3. They already have two folding chairs in the closet.
  4. Ben can use his desk chair as the sixth seat.
  5. Ben is supposed to pick up the food.
  6. They decide to write the final jobs on a list.

That's not what I meant · What I meant was · Maybe I wasn't clear · Let me put it another way · So, are you saying · Sorry, I misunderstood

  1. A: I canceled the whole order, like you asked.
    B: __________. I only asked you to remove one item.

  2. A: You said you didn't want the report.
    B: __________, I don't need it until Friday.

  3. “__________. The first plan is possible, but it costs too much.”

  4. “__________. I should have included the room number.”

  5. “__________ we need to bring our own chairs?”

  6. “__________. I thought you said fifteen, not fifty.”

  1. I __________ (need / buy) some paper towels before the guests arrive.
  2. Who __________ (supposed / take) the recycling downstairs?
  3. We don't have __________ clean cups. (some / any)
  4. There are six guests, but we only have four chairs. We need __________ more chairs. (a little / a few)
  5. There isn't __________ juice left. (many / much)
  6. Would you mind __________ (turn) the music down?
  7. You __________ (not have to / bring) dessert. Lena is bringing some.

  1. “Take care of the kitchen.”

  2. “We need more drinks.”

  3. “Please do it later.”

Hi Sam—small change for Saturday. Five people are coming, not seven. Julia is bringing dessert, so we don't need another cake. Please put some water in the fridge, and ask Leo to set up five seats in the living room. The front door isn't working properly, so ask everyone to use the side entrance. Could you pass this on to Leo? Thanks!

  • 最终人数;
  • 不需要再准备什么;
  • Sam和Leo需要完成的准备;

  1. You and a housemate have five chores. Open the discussion by saying that responsibilities must be assigned, ask who has the bathroom this time, and say that the laundry is yours this time.
  2. The recycling truck comes at 9:00. State what you must do before then. The written plan gives the grocery pickup to your partner, but they think it is your job; say what you had understood about the assignment.
  3. One job takes much longer than expected. Offer to exchange it, then restate both people's final jobs and ask for confirmation.
  4. You are hosting a small dinner on Saturday. Tell a friend about the plan and invite them.
  5. Now answer as the guest: accept and offer to bring something. Switch back to the host and say one item that would be useful.
  6. Before shopping, suggest organizing the needed items. After the dinner, thank the host.
  7. Music from next door reaches your bedroom. Start with a polite interruption, describe where the sound is coming through, and ask for lower volume.
  8. The speaker is against the shared wall. Ask politely for it to be moved without giving an order.
  9. Answer as the neighbor: acknowledge that you were unaware of the volume and apologize. Switch roles, then ask whether the neighbor could use headphones after ten.
  10. Someone thinks “later” means tonight; you meant tomorrow afternoon. Signal the mismatch and restate the time.
  11. Your first instructions were unclear. Take some responsibility and state them in a different way. Then answer as the listener who admits the misunderstanding.
  12. After several changes, say what you now think the other person means and ask for confirmation. Then repeat all people, jobs and times to check the final plan.
  13. You are running late to help with a dinner at a friend's home. Give a spoken update: describe your current situation, give an expected arrival time, propose a different start time, and confirm one preparation job after your friend replies.

9. Make It Yours

  1. A说出一项含糊安排;
  2. B按另一种意思行动或复述;
  3. A指出这不是原意,并承担自己没说清的一部分责任;
  4. A补充具体动作、数量和时间;
  5. B复述最终安排;

  • 谁负责哪两项任务;
  • 需要多少物品;
  • 一项礼貌请求;

That's not what I meant.

11. Self-check
