Lesson 90 — The Two Experts Don't Quite Agree

1. Before You Start

  • 先说明两位来源真正同意的部分;
  • 用来源框架呈现不同建议而不替任何一方站队;
  • 区分结论差异、优先标准差异和不同风险容忍度;
  • 识别表面冲突背后仍缺少的数据;

2. Main Conversation

Synthesis shows the structure of a disagreement instead of selecting a winner

Robin and Keira compare two written recommendations before a steering meeting. Imani is a digital-preservation consultant; Julian is an access-systems engineer.

Part A — Establishing common ground

Robin: My first note says, “Imani recommends a phased migration, but Julian wants a single cutover.” It sounds as if they disagree about everything.

Keira: They do not. Both experts agree that the original archive must remain unchanged, every imported batch must be checked and a rollback copy must exist before public access changes.

Robin: They also agree that the three-hundred-record test should happen before any full decision.

Keira: Yes. According to Imani, the test should be followed by several small batches so mapping errors can be isolated and corrected before the next batch.

Robin: Julian argues that a long parallel period creates duplicate staff work and two changing versions of the catalog.

Keira: Where they differ is the stage after the test, not whether accuracy or rollback matters.

Robin: Imani places more weight on limiting the size of any one error. Julian places more weight on limiting the time staff must operate two systems.

Keira: That is a better comparison than “cautious expert versus fast expert.” Both are managing risk; they prioritize different kinds.

Robin: Does Julian dismiss the risk of mapping errors?

Keira: No. His note proposes a forty-eight-hour public freeze, a complete validation run and a prepared rollback. He thinks concentrated checking is more controllable than repeated small cutovers.

Part B — Finding the decision hinge

Robin: That doesn’t necessarily contradict Imani’s preservation rule. He accepts the same unchanged source copy and validation requirement.

Keira: Correct. Imani questions whether one validation weekend gives staff enough time to spot subtle description errors across different collections.

Robin: The disagreement turns on whether smaller error exposure is worth several weeks of parallel work.

Keira: And our current briefing does not estimate the staffing cost of parallel work or the rate of subtle errors in the test batch.

Robin: So I cannot conclude that either approach is cheaper or safer overall.

Keira: Right. You can report which risk each approach reduces and which new burden it creates.

Robin: Here’s the short version for the meeting: both experts require an unchanged source, validation and rollback. Imani supports staged batches to contain errors; Julian supports one controlled cutover to reduce parallel work.

Keira: Add the evidence gap: the test must tell us about error type and review time before the trade-off can be assessed.

Robin: I’ve left out their software preferences because neither recommendation depends on a specific brand in this exercise.

Keira: Good. A neutral synthesis gives decision-makers the shared floor, the real hinge and the missing evidence—not a winner chosen by the summarizer.

Comparison matrix

Question Imani Ford Julian Park Shared position
after the test several small batches one prepared cutover test first
priority contain each error shorten parallel work protect accuracy
control review between batches 48-hour freeze and full validation unchanged source and rollback
concern about other path subtle errors may escape a weekend duplicate work and version drift current estimates incomplete

Check the story

  1. Which three safeguards do both experts require?
  2. What does Imani recommend after the test?
  3. What burden concerns Julian?
  4. Why is “cautious versus fast” an unfair comparison?
  5. What is the central trade-off?
  6. Which two kinds of evidence are still missing?

4. Read, Notice, Understand

According to Imani, phased batches make individual errors easier to isolate.
Julian argues that prolonged parallel operation creates duplicate work.

5. What People Actually Say

1. Both experts agree that …

Both experts agree that an unchanged source copy must be kept.

2. Where they differ is …

Where they differ is the migration stage after the test.

3. According to …

According to Imani, smaller batches make errors easier to isolate.

4. … places more weight on …

Julian places more weight on reducing parallel staff work.

5. That doesn't necessarily contradict …

That doesn’t necessarily contradict the shared preservation rule.

6. The disagreement turns on …

The disagreement turns on error containment versus parallel-work burden.

Don’t Say It That Way

One expert is cautious; the other is reckless. They prioritize error containment and operational duration differently.
Imani proved phases are safer. Imani argues that phases limit the size of any one error.
Julian ignores accuracy. Julian also requires validation and rollback but prefers one cutover.
The experts completely disagree. They agree on safeguards and differ on the post-test sequence.

6. Grammar in the Scene — Reporting Distance and Synthesis

  • states:明确陈述;
  • argues:提出有依据的立场;
  • recommends:建议行动;
  • questions whether:质疑某条件是否足够;

Imani argues that phased batches limit error exposure.

Both require validation, while they differ on the number of cutovers.

Julian prioritizes shorter parallel operation. That doesn’t necessarily mean he accepts more inaccuracy.

  1. Imani (recommends / proves) several smaller batches.
  2. Julian questions ______ a long parallel period is manageable. (whether / that)
  4. Julian does not care about errors
  6. The disagreement turns on …

7. Sound Natural —

According to IMANI, / smaller batches limit each error.
JULIAN ARGUES / that a long parallel period creates duplicate work.

Both experts require VALIDATION AND ROLLBACK, / while they differ on HOW TO CUT OVER.

Both experts agree that the source archive must remain unchanged.
Where they differ is the stage after the test.
Imani places more weight on containing individual errors.
The disagreement turns on containment versus parallel work.

8. Practice

  1. Imani and Julian disagree about keeping a source copy.
  2. Imani recommends small batches after the test.
  3. Julian proposes no validation.
  4. Both experts are trying to manage risk.
  5. The briefing includes a reliable estimate of parallel staffing cost.
  6. Robin should choose a winner in the synthesis.

B. Agreement / Difference / Basis / Gap

Here’s the short version / The main point is / The part that matters for … / In practical terms / I’ve left out … / The short version shouldn’t change …。

  4. Julian

9. Make It Yours

只写shared goal / shared safeguards / view A / basis A / view B / basis B / hinge / missing evidence。
