Lesson 69 — Where Did That Claim Come From?

1. Before You Start

  • 说清当前说法来自哪一层材料;
  • 区分“某人声称”“材料显示”“作者推断”和“尚未找到证据”;
  • 沿链接或引用追到最接近原始记录的材料;
  • 发现对象、指标、时间和因果在转述中发生的变化;

  • trace back 追溯

2. Main Conversation

A citation can still change the claim

Maya and Marcus are preparing a source-checking exercise for a general staff workshop. A fictional social post says, “Fifteen-minute meetings cut missed deadlines by 40%.”

Part A — Following the chain

Maya: The post has been shared hundreds of times, but where did that claim come from?

Marcus: According to WorkBright Daily, “a recent study proves that fifteen-minute meetings cut missed deadlines by forty percent.” It links to a QuickWork newsletter.

Maya: Does the newsletter report a study?

Marcus: Not directly. The claim appears to come from a paragraph titled “Short meetings, better delivery.” The post cites QuickWork, but the newsletter cites a ClearDay customer story.

Maya: Can we trace that back to the customer story?

Marcus: Yes. The original source says one twelve-person support team changed its daily check-in from thirty minutes to fifteen for eight weeks.

Maya: What result does it actually report?

Marcus: The team’s overdue action items fell from ten in the first week to six in the eighth week. That is a forty percent reduction in one count.

Maya: That is not the same as “missed deadlines fell by forty percent.” An overdue action item could be smaller than a project deadline.

Marcus: Agreed. I also haven’t found evidence that meeting length was the only change.

Part B — Marking what each source added

Maya: What else changed?

Marcus: The customer story says the team introduced a written agenda, named an owner for every action and reviewed unfinished items the next day.

Maya: Then the original record reports several changes together. Does it use the word prove?

Marcus: No. It says the team lead “believed the shorter format helped maintain focus.” That is an attributed interpretation, not a controlled causal result.

Maya: How did QuickWork summarize it?

Marcus: “A support team reduced overdue work by forty percent after switching to shorter meetings.” It kept one team and after, but omitted the agenda and owner list.

Maya: WorkBright then changed overdue work to missed deadlines, one support team to a general rule, and after to proves that.

Marcus: We seem to agree that the numerical calculation is traceable, while the population, measure and causal strength expanded at each step.

Maya: For now, let’s label the sources precisely: social claim, newsletter summary and customer story—not post, article and study as if they were equivalent.

Marcus: I’ll summarize what we’ve found: the earliest record describes one team, eight weeks, bundled process changes and a drop from ten to six overdue action items. I haven’t found a study showing that fifteen-minute meetings alone cut missed deadlines across other teams, organizations or kinds of work.

Source chain packet

Layer Exact type What it says What it leaves out or adds
1 WorkBright Daily social post “A recent study proves that fifteen-minute meetings cut missed deadlines by 40%.” adds study, proves, general population and missed deadlines
2 QuickWork newsletter one support team reduced overdue work by 40% after switching to shorter meetings omits other process changes; uses after, not because
3 ClearDay customer story one 12-person team; 8 weeks; overdue action items 10→6; shorter check-ins plus agenda, owners and next-day review customer story, not controlled study; team lead gives interpretation

The 40% arithmetic is correct for10 → 6, but arithmetic accuracy does not protect the surrounding claim from changes in measure, scope or causality.

Check the story

  1. What source does the social post link to?
  2. What is the earliest visible record in the packet?
  3. What changed from ten to six?
  4. What process changes happened alongside shorter meetings?
  5. What did the team lead believe?
  6. Which three parts of the claim expanded as it moved through the chain?

1 WorkBright Daily

Where did that claim come from?

4. Read, Notice, Understand

  • 扩大对象:one support team → teams in general
  • 增强因果:after → because → proves

The post claims
The newsletter summarizes
The customer story reports
The team lead believes

5. What People Actually Say

1. According to …, …

According to the customer story, one team changed four parts of its process.

2. The claim appears to come from …

The percentage appears to come from a change from ten to six items.

3. The original source says …

The original source says the check-ins were part of a wider process change.

4. The post cites …, but …

The post cites the newsletter, but the newsletter does not describe a study.

5. I haven’t found evidence that …

I haven’t found evidence that meeting length was the only cause.

6. Can we trace that back to …?

Can we trace that number back to the original record?

Don’t Say It That Way

The internet says… According to a WorkBright social post, …
The study proves… The customer story reports a change in one team.
There is no evidence. I haven’t found evidence in this source chain that …
The source is original, so it is true. This is the earliest record we found; it still has important limitations.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

1. say / report / claim / suggest

The post says …(中性描述文字)
The story reports a numerical change.(记录)
The post claims the change was causal.(提示说法需核查)
The pattern suggests a possible relationship.(有限推断)

2. According to只标来源

According to QuickWork, the team reduced overdue work.

它不等于QuickWork is correct。

According to QuickWork, …; however, the original story uses a narrower measure.

3. cite + 名词link to + 名词

The post cites the newsletter.
The newsletter links to the customer story.

I haven’t found evidence that …
We have traced the percentage to …

不要把haven’t found改成there is no,除非检索范围足以支持绝对结论。

The number was taken from a customer story.
The claim was repeated by a newsletter.

  1. According ______ the customer story, one team changed its process. (to / with)
  2. The post (claims / proves) that shorter meetings caused the result.(描述待核查说法)
  3. The newsletter ______ to the customer story. (links / cites to)
  4. I ______ found evidence that the source is a study. (haven’t / didn’t,
  5. The percentage was taken ______ a change from ten to six. (from / by)
  6. The original record (reports / guarantees) bundled changes.

7. Sound Natural —

ACCORDING TO THE POST, / fifteen-minute meetings cut missed deadlines.

The original source says ONE TEAM / reduced OVERDUE ACTION ITEMS.

I haven’t found evidence

I haven’t found EVIDENCE / that meeting length was the ONLY CAUSE.

According to the post, a study proved the claim.
The claim appears to come from a customer story.
The post cites a newsletter, but the newsletter cites one team.
I haven’t found evidence that the change had a single cause.

8. Practice

  1. WorkBright links directly to a controlled study.
  2. The earliest record describes one twelve-person support team.
  3. Missed project deadlines fell from ten to six.
  4. The team changed several process features at the same time.
  5. The team lead’s belief is the same as a causal test.
  6. The percentage can be calculated even though the wider claim is distorted.

B. Source / Measure / Population / Causality

  1. customer story → recent study
  2. overdue action items → missed deadlines
  3. one support team → teams
  4. after → proves that
  5. team lead believed → research established
  6. ten to six → forty percent reduction

  1. Short meetings reduce missed deadlines.
  2. Forty percent of deadlines improved.
  3. The meeting caused better performance.
  4. A study tested twelve people.
  5. No evidence supports other explanations.

People who prefer short meetings are more productive:指出常见假设、承认有限可能、列出依赖条件、拒绝从一个团队推广、给一个个人范围例子,并写出更准确替代句。

  • 每人只能报告自己材料真正包含的内容;
  • 逐层追问来源;
  • 指出四类措辞变化;
  • I haven’t found evidence that …保留当前检索边界;

WorkBright post
“A recent study proves that fifteen-minute meetings cut missed deadlines by 40%.”

QuickWork newsletter
“A support team reduced overdue work by 40% after switching to shorter meetings.”

ClearDay customer story
“During an eight-week process change, a twelve-person support team shortened daily check-ins, added written agendas and named an owner for every action. Open action items past their target date numbered ten in week one and six in week eight. The team lead believed the shorter format helped maintain focus.”

  1. 当前说法与当前来源;
  2. 来源链;
  3. 最早材料真正说法;
  4. 转述中改变的对象/指标/因果;
  5. 尚未找到的证据;

  • claim;
  • immediate source;
  • earliest located source;
  • exact reported measure;
  • added or omitted wording;
  • unresolved evidence;
  • one-sentence corrected version.

Where does the source say that?Which word changed?What have you not checked?。

9. Make It Yours

CURRENT CLAIM → SUMMARY → EARLIEST LOCATED RECORD

reports → suggests → shows → proves

  1. According to WorkBright, short meetings reduce missed deadlines; the original story uses a narrower measure.
  2. The customer story reports that overdue action items fell from ten to six, a forty percent reduction in that count.
  3. The team lead believed the shorter format helped, but several process changes happened together.
  4. The claim appears to come from a customer story about one twelve-person team, not a controlled study.
  5. I haven’t found evidence in this packet that rules out the agenda, ownership and review process as explanations.

People sometimes assume that preferring short meetings means being more productive. That may be true for some people, but it depends on the task, preparation and follow-up. I wouldn’t generalize from one support team to all workers. In my case, a short meeting helps only when the agenda is clear. A more accurate way to put it is that some teams may benefit from shorter meetings when the surrounding process supports them.

  1. According to the post, a recent study proved the claim.
  2. The percentage appears to come from a change from ten items to six.
  3. The original source says it was one twelve-person support team.
  4. The post cites the newsletter, but the newsletter cites a customer story.
  5. I haven’t found evidence that meeting length was the only cause.
  6. Can we trace that number back to the earliest record?
