Lesson 68 — People Make Assumptions
1. Before You Start
always / obviously / everyone / if …, then …等过度概括信号; - 承认一句话可能适用于部分人,而不接受它代表所有人;
- 用对象、时间、条件和证据限制判断;
- 说明个人经历与群体结论之间的距离;
2. Main Conversation
A useful response does more than say “It depends”
Aisha has received five confident comments after mentioning the exploratory Northline conversation. She reviews them with Maya and Grace before replying to the person who introduced her to the collective.
Part A — Finding the hidden generalization
Aisha: The first comment says, “Freelancers choose independence because they dislike structure.” People sometimes assume that, but my work has plenty of structure.
Maya: A more accurate way to put it is that some freelancers want control over which structure they accept. Your schedules, briefs and deadlines haven’t disappeared.
Grace: What is the second comment?
Aisha: “A collective would give you stable income.” That may be true for some arrangements, but this one has no agreed fee, minimum workload or cancellation policy.
Maya: So stability depends on the terms, not the word collective.
Aisha: Exactly. The third says, “If you need so many boundaries, you probably aren’t a team player.” In my case, clear boundaries are what would let me contribute reliably without neglecting existing commitments.
Grace: I wouldn’t generalize from one person’s preferred boundaries to their ability to collaborate. The better question is whether the boundaries are compatible with the team’s actual needs.
Maya: And asking is not demanding that every condition be accepted.
Aisha: The fourth comment assumes that requesting a six-week draft means I have basically decided to join.
Grace: Can we agree on this much: reading a draft creates information, not consent?
Part B — Replacing labels with conditions
Aisha: Yes. We seem to agree that no work begins unless both sides later accept written terms. We still disagree—Northline and I may still disagree—about schedule, fee or client boundaries after reading them.
Maya: For now, let’s keep the next step small: receive the discussion draft, check it against your value map and ask questions.
Grace: You can revisit the trial only when the counted hours, decision rights, fee, review point and exit terms are clear.
Aisha: The last comment says, “People who care about balance are less ambitious.” That one bothers me most.
Maya: It may describe a particular speaker’s definition of ambition, but it doesn’t show what another person is willing to build over time.
Grace: Looking back, many turning points involve changing a definition, as Maya did with useful work. A changed definition is not evidence of less commitment.
Aisha: For me, ambition includes producing work I can sustain and stand behind. Although growth matters, constant availability is not the only evidence of it.
Maya: Then your response can follow one pattern: name the assumption, acknowledge the limited possibility, add the missing condition and give your case without making a new generalization.
Grace: I’ll summarize what we’ve decided: you are willing to read one nonbinding draft; you have not accepted an arrangement; and your reasons belong to your current circumstances.
Aisha: Good. I’ll reply with that wording and six questions. If the draft cannot protect the minimum conditions, I can decline without claiming that collectives never work.
Five claims under review
| Original claim | Missing limit | More accurate direction |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancers dislike structure. | which freelancers; what kind of structure | some people prefer control over the structures they accept |
| A collective gives stable income. | fee, workload, payment and cancellation terms | some arrangements may improve predictability when terms support it |
| Boundaries show poor teamwork. | team needs; reason for boundary; reliability | compatible boundaries can support reliable contribution |
| Asking for a draft means deciding to join. | later review and consent | a draft provides information; it does not create acceptance |
| Balance shows less ambition. | definition, time horizon and sustainable effort | people define ambition differently and may protect sustainability |

4. Read, Notice, Understand
One freelancer said … → Freelancers … -
A and B happened together → A caused B -
asks for boundaries → is not a team player
It depends
It depends on the fee, minimum workload and cancellation terms.
Aisha有结构化工作,不足以证明All freelancers like structure。
5. What People Actually Say
1. People sometimes assume that …
People sometimes assume that a fixed schedule is automatically stable.
2. That may be true for some people, but …
That may be true for some people, but the financial terms differ widely.
3. It depends on …
It depends on who sets the schedule and how changes are handled.
4. I wouldn’t generalize from …
I wouldn’t generalize from one successful trial to every future project.
5. In my case, …
In my case, clear limits make reliable collaboration easier.
6. A more accurate way to put it is …
A more accurate way to put it is that some arrangements improve predictability when the terms are clear.
Don’t Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| Everyone thinks freelancers hate rules. | 虚构全体共识 | People sometimes assume that freelancers dislike structure. |
| That is completely false. | 可能抹掉有限适用情况 | That may be true in some cases, but it depends on the arrangement. |
| My friend likes fixed hours, so employees prefer routine. | 个案扩大为群体 | In my friend’s case, fixed hours support planning; I wouldn’t generalize beyond that. |
| It depends. | 没有信息 | It depends on decision rights, workload and exit terms. |
6. Grammar in the Scene —
|---|---|
| everyone | some people / many people in this group / the three respondents |
| always | sometimes / often / in this situation |
| proves | suggests / is consistent with / does not show |
| because | may be related to / one possible reason is |
That may be true for some people, but the current invitation gives no fee evidence.
A trial could improve predictability if the minimum workload and cancellation terms were clear.
I used to define ambition as constant availability. Looking back, I can see why that definition changed.
Although predictability matters, it is not the only value in this decision.
- Freelancers always avoid structure.
- One trial proves the model is sustainable.
- Everyone with family responsibilities wants fixed hours.
- Asking questions means a person has decided to accept.
- A busy schedule shows ambition.
- One person’s experience tells us why people choose this path.
7. Sound Natural —
That may be true for SOME PEOPLE, / but not in EVERY ARRANGEMENT.
In my case
IN MY CASE, / clear boundaries support reliable teamwork.
A more accurate way to put it is / that the outcome depends on the TERMS.
People sometimes assume that flexibility means no structure.
That may be true for some people, but it isn’t a general rule.
It depends on who controls the arrangement.
In my case, clear structure protects flexibility.
8. Practice
- Aisha has accepted a six-week Northline trial.
- Her freelance work contains schedules, briefs and deadlines.
- A collective label guarantees a minimum workload.
- Reading a draft creates information but not consent.
- Maya says all ambitious people need constant availability.
- Aisha can decline limited terms without condemning every collective.
- One person asked for quiet hours, so remote workers dislike people.
- The first trial went well; therefore the model will always work.
- Two colleagues changed jobs after training, so training caused their decisions.
- A person who values income is materialistic.
- Three survey replies used the same feature, so users prefer it.
- She answered late twice, so she never respects deadlines.
- Parents always want flexible hours.
- People who stay in one job fear change.
- Freelancers cannot work in teams.
- A short trial guarantees a good long-term fit.
- Protecting personal time shows a lack of ambition.
D. Unit 17
- 从现在回看过去;
- 恢复当时理解;
- 说明转折前已发生;
- 过去状态/习惯;
- 标出理解改变时刻;
- 长期影响;
- 当前首要价值;
- 高度重视;
- 修正误读;
- 个人优先级;
- 有限承认;
- 价值冲突方法;
- 两项需要平衡;
- 承认限制后给主判断;
- 真实原因;
- 条件服务的目的;
- 实现目的所需条件;
- Jordan
- Jordan
- 原句;
- 过度扩大在哪里;
- 哪一小部分可能成立;
- 取决于哪些条件;
- 一个个人或虚构反例;
- 讲一段相关转折及长期影响;
- 排序三个价值;
- 比较两个安排和真实取舍;
- 回应两条过度概括;
- 记录共识、分歧和下一信息点;
- 感谢引见;
- 澄清愿意阅读草案但尚未接受;
- 说明两个当前优先级;
- 提出关于工时、决策权、费用、现有客户、复查和退出的6个问题;
- 纠正一条关于自由职业者的概括;
9. Make It Yours
always / never吗?
第一版只说你不同意;第二版使用may / some / in my case / depends on / a more accurate way。

Check the story
- Some freelancers want control over which structures they accept; freelancing does not mean having no structure.
- Because fee, minimum workload, payment and cancellation terms are not agreed.
- Clear boundaries could protect existing commitments and make her contribution more reliable.
- It creates information; it does not create consent or an accepted arrangement.
- Producing work she can sustain and stand behind, not constant availability.
- Reply that she is willing to read one nonbinding draft and ask six questions; she is not accepting work.
- Some freelancers may avoid particular structures, but the preference varies by person and arrangement.
- One trial suggests the model can work under those conditions; it does not establish long-term sustainability.
- Some people with family responsibilities may prefer fixed hours, while others need flexibility.
- Asking for a draft means the person wants information, not necessarily that they will accept.
- A busy schedule may reflect workload; it does not by itself show ambition.

Can we agree on this much: reading the draft would answer questions without creating consent? We seem to agree that more information would help. We still disagree about whether the likely benefits justify the review time. For now, let’s request only the written draft. We can revisit the trial when fee, hours, decision rights, existing clients and exit terms are clear. I’ll summarize what we’ve decided and record that no arrangement has been accepted.
Hi, I’m Jordan. When I left a large company for a smaller organization, several people assumed I wanted less responsibility. In fact, I had been comparing decision time, travel and the kind of work I could actually own. The smaller team gave me broader responsibility, although it offered fewer formal promotion levels. That choice worked for me at that stage, but I wouldn’t generalize from it. A more accurate way to put it is that organization size affects opportunities differently depending on the role, the person and the terms.
要点:
- Others assumed Jordan wanted less responsibility.
- Decision time, travel and the work Jordan could own.
- That moving to a smaller organization worked for Jordan at that stage.
- Organization size affects opportunities differently depending on the role, person and terms.
- People sometimes assume that freelancers dislike structure.
