Lesson 59 — If We'd Left Earlier…

1. Before You Start

  • 用第三条件句讨论没有发生的过去条件及其假设结果;
  • 区分事实、当时已知信息和事后才出现的信息;
  • 说明哪一个变化真正会改变结果;
  • Looking back进行复盘,但不用它包装责备;

说If you had checked …

2. Main Conversation

A missed train, viewed with later information

Daniel and Grace reach Port Mason Central at 5:13 p.m. Their direct train to Riverton left three minutes earlier. They reconstruct the missed connection before choosing another route.

Part A — Identifying what could have changed

Grace: The 5:10 direct train has gone. We reached the platform at 5:13.

Daniel: If we’d left when the host gave the early-exit reminder at 4:05, we would’ve caught the 4:25 tram.

Grace: Yes, but at the time we didn’t know the final Q&A would continue until 4:15.

Daniel: Looking back, staying until 4:18 left us only seven minutes to reach the tram stop.

Grace: I don’t regret hearing the last answer, but it had a transport consequence. We walked out at 4:20 and missed the tram.

Daniel: The journey app shows that there was a 4:30 local bus from the stop beside the center.

Grace: That bus wasn’t on our paper map. If we’d checked the live board before leaving, we would’ve taken it.

Daniel: It was due here at 5:02, so it would have given us eight minutes for the connection.

Grace: That would have changed the result. Simply walking faster after 4:20 probably wouldn’t have been enough.

Daniel: Agreed. The useful alternatives were leaving at 4:05 or checking live departures before we walked to the tram.

Part B — Learning without blaming

Grace: We should also record what we knew at the time. The printed program said the workshop ended at four.

Daniel: And the paper map showed only the tram route. We chose that route with incomplete information.

Grace: It doesn’t help to blame either of us for not using a bus we didn’t know about.

Daniel: Right. Still, we could have checked a live source when the session ran late.

Grace: That’s a fair process lesson. It’s different from saying one person caused the whole problem.

Daniel: Let’s write it precisely: the Q&A overran, we left at 4:20, and our old map omitted the 4:30 bus.

Grace: Then add the counterfactual: if we’d checked live departures at the door, we would’ve seen a workable connection.

Daniel: For the next trip, our trigger can be “ten minutes behind plan means check live options.”

Grace: Good. Now we need another way home, not another argument about the train that has already left.

Daniel: I’ll open the current departure board, and we’ll compare the remaining routes against our actual priorities.

Verified timeline

The host allowed early departure at 4:05. The Q&A ended at 4:15. Daniel and Grace stayed until 4:18 and left the center at 4:20. They missed the 4:25 tram. A 4:30 local bus, absent from their old paper map, would have reached Central at 5:02. They arrived by their later route at 5:13, three minutes after the direct train departed.

Check the story

  1. When did Daniel and Grace reach the platform?
  2. What two earlier actions could have produced a workable connection?
  3. Why did they not know about the 4:30 bus?
  4. Which imagined change probably would not have been enough?
  5. What information did they have at the time?
  6. What future trigger do they create?

If we'd left..., we would've caught...

4. Read, Notice, Understand

Information by time

Information Known at 4:05–4:20? Known during review?
printed end time: 4:00 yes yes
Q&A would run to 4:15 no yes
paper map showed tram yes yes
live departures listed 4:30 bus not checked yes
bus would reach Central at 5:02 no yes

  1. 事实:They left at 4:20 and arrived at 5:13.
If they had checked the live board, they would have seen the bus.
If the plan slips by ten minutes next time, check live departures.

The bus was scheduled to arrive at 5:02.

因此教材说would have given us eight minutes时,依据的是当时的官方时刻;真实世界复盘可进一步写would probably have来保留运行不确定性。

5. What People Actually Say

1. If we’d …, we would’ve …

we’d在这里是we had

If we’d left at 4:05, we would’ve caught the tram.

2. We would have … if …

We would have seen the bus if we had checked the live board.

3. At the time, we didn’t know …

At the time, we didn’t know the session would overrun.

4. Looking back, …

Looking back, our paper map was no longer enough.

5. That would have changed …

An eight-minute connection would have changed the outcome.

6. It doesn’t help to blame …

It doesn’t help to blame one person. We need a better live-information check.

Don’t Say It That Way

If you weren’t slow, we caught it. If we’d left earlier, we would’ve caught it.
You should have known about the bus. At the time, neither of us knew about the bus.
Everything would be perfect. That would have improved this connection.
The old map caused everything. The old map was one factor; the late departure was another.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

1. 结构

If + had + 过去分词, would have + 过去分词

If we had left earlier, we would have caught the tram.

If we’d left earlier, we would’ve caught the tram.

  • We did not leave at 4:05.
  • We did not catch the tram.

If we had left at 4:05, we would have caught it.

If we had checked the live board, we would have seen the bus.
We would have seen the bus if we had checked the live board.

If we would have checked the board, …

If we had checked the board, …

  1. If we ______ (leave) at 4:05, we ______ (catch) the tram.
  2. We ______ (see) the bus if we ______ (check) the live board.
  3. If the map ______ (include) the bus, we ______ (consider) it.
  4. An earlier departure ______ (give) us more time.
  5. At the time, we ______ not ______ (know) the Q&A would overrun.
  6. Looking back, that check ______ (change) the result.

7. Sound Natural — 听出`’d`和`would’ve`

If we’d LEFT earlier, / we WOULD’VE CAUGHT the tram.

we’d不能只靠声音判断是we had还是we would,要看后面的形式:

  • we’d left = we had left
  • we’d leave = we would leave

If we’d checked the LIVE BOARD, / we would’ve seen the BUS.

降低责备感时,At the time单独成一个意群:

At the TIME, / we didn’t know about the bus.

If we’d left earlier, we would’ve caught the tram.
At the time, we didn’t know the session would run late.
Looking back, a live check would have helped.
It doesn’t help to blame either of us.

8. Practice

  1. Daniel and Grace caught the 5:10 direct train.
  2. The host gave an early-exit reminder at 4:05.
  3. Their paper map included the local bus.
  4. The bus was scheduled to reach Central before the train left.
  5. Daniel says walking faster definitely would have solved the problem.
  6. They turn the review into a future live-information trigger.

  1. We didn’t charge the phone. We couldn’t open the mobile ticket.
  2. I didn’t check the updated gate. I waited at the old gate.
  3. The meeting ran late. She missed the last bus.
  4. They saved only a paper map. They didn’t see the service change.
  5. He did not ask about the closing time. He arrived after the desk closed.

  • leave at 17:30;
  • walk slightly faster;
  • check for the ticket before leaving;
  • buy coffee at 17:35;

  1. 先列共同确认的三个事实;
  2. 说明双方当时各自知道什么;
  3. 写两条第三条件句;
  4. 拒绝把全部责任归给一个人;

  • 用40秒讲事实;
  • 用两条第三条件句分析两个可改变点;
  • At the time说明信息限制;
  • 用一句话阻止责怪;

  • verified timeline;
  • information available at the time;
  • one factor that would have changed the result;
  • one tempting claim that evidence does not support;
  • one future trigger and owner.

9. Make It Yours

  • 条件是否真的没有发生;
  • 结果是否属于同一段过去;

We should be more careful

If our departure is ten minutes behind plan, Grace checks the live board before we leave the building.

FACT → AT-THE-TIME INFORMATION → COUNTERFACTUAL → NEXT TRIGGER

10. Answer Key

Check the story

  1. At 5:13.
  2. Leaving at 4:05 or checking live departures before walking to the tram.
  3. Their old paper map omitted it, and they did not check the live board.
  4. Walking slightly faster after 4:20.
  5. The printed 4:00 end time and a paper map showing only the tram route.
  6. If they fall ten minutes behind plan, they check live options.

  1. had left; would have caught
  2. would have seen; had checked
  3. had included; would have considered
  4. would have given
  5. did; know
  6. would have changed

7A

  1. False
  2. True
  3. False
  4. True
  5. False
  6. True

  1. If we had charged the phone, we would have been able to open the mobile ticket.
  2. If I had checked the updated gate, I would not have waited at the old gate.
  3. If the meeting had not run late, she would not have missed the last bus.
  4. If they had checked a live source, they would have seen the service change.
  5. If he had asked about the closing time, he would not have arrived after the desk closed.

If I had left at 17:30, I would have had time to return for the ticket. If I had checked for the ticket before leaving, I would not have needed to return. Walking slightly faster might not have saved seven minutes, and buying coffee is not part of the stated timeline, so the material does not show that it affected the result.

That’s not how I remember the departure time. As I remember it, we left closer to 17:45. I may be mixing up the time we locked the door with the time we reached the café. What happened before the coffee purchase? The door record shows 17:43, and the receipt shows 17:48. We were both right that we left before 17:45, but the exact moment we stepped outside is not recorded.

  1. Is that how it’s usually done at this station?
  2. Do connecting passengers have to collect a paper slip?
  3. Are we supposed to reach the platform ten minutes before boarding closes?
  4. Is it okay if I take a photo of the current timetable?
  5. The passengers I observed this afternoon usually checked the electronic board first.
  6. It depends on the ticket type. Let’s confirm it at the desk.

  1. If we’d left earlier, we would’ve caught the tram.
  2. If we’d checked the live information, we would’ve seen that bus.
  3. At the time, we didn’t know the Q&A would run late.
  4. Looking back, our paper map was no longer enough.
  5. That would have changed the connection.
  6. It doesn’t help to blame either person.

11. Self-check

  • 我知道we’d left中的’d表示had
