Lesson 57 — That's Not How I Remember It
1. Before You Start
- 礼貌指出自己的记忆不同,而不把对方说成撒谎;
- 用一般过去时、过去进行时和过去完成时对齐事件;
- 主动寻找“分歧发生在哪一步”,而不是争论整段故事;
- 用照片、通知或票据核对可验证细节;
- day pass 日票
- time stamp 时间戳
- line up 排队
2. Main Conversation
Two memories can describe different parts of one trip
Daniel and Grace have arrived in Port Mason for a one-day oral-history methods workshop. Over coffee, they compare how they found the archive shuttle that morning.
Part A — Locating the disagreement
Daniel: We went straight to Bay 4 after the train arrived, didn't we?
Grace: That's not how I remember it. I remember waiting at Bay 6 while you bought the day passes.
Daniel: As I remember it, the board was already showing Bay 4 when we entered the station hall.
Grace: I may be mixing up the first board with the later announcement, but an attendant definitely pointed me toward Bay 6.
Daniel: What happened before I went to the ticket machine?
Grace: The train had arrived at nine oh five. We checked the main board, and then you went to buy the passes.
Daniel: While I was paying, were you waiting beside the shuttle sign?
Grace: Yes. I took a photo because the bay number was partly hidden by a poster.
Daniel: What time does the photo show?
Grace: Nine twelve, and the sign in the photo says Bay 6.
Part B — Building one evidence-based timeline
Daniel: Then my memory of going straight to Bay 4 can't be complete. What happened after the photo?
Grace: A service alert sounded while you were walking back. It moved the nine twenty-two shuttle from Bay 6 to Bay 4.
Daniel: That fits. By the time I returned, the board had changed, so Bay 4 is the part I remembered.
Grace: The alert in my phone history is time-stamped nine fourteen.
Daniel: And my pass receipt says nine eleven. The records show that you waited at Bay 6 while I was buying the passes.
Grace: Then we both walked to Bay 4 after the alert and boarded at nine twenty-two.
Daniel: We were both right about one part and incomplete about another.
Grace: Exactly. My first version left out the change, and yours left out the original bay.
Daniel: Thanks for flagging that. What I meant was that Bay 4 was the only bay I saw after buying the passes.
Grace: To avoid confusion, let's write the final sequence with both bay numbers and the alert time.
Reconstructed timeline
The train arrived at 9:05. The original board showed Bay 6. Daniel bought two day passes at 9:11 while Grace waited and took a photo at 9:12. A 9:14 alert moved the 9:22 shuttle to Bay 4. They changed bays and boarded on time.
Check the story
- Which bay does Daniel remember first?
- Where does Grace remember waiting?
- What does Grace's photo show?
- What happened at 9:14?
- Why does Daniel mainly remember Bay 4?
- In what sense are both memories partly correct?
That's not how I remember it不是直接说对方“记错了”,而是较温和地说明“我的记忆和你的说法不一样”。
4. Read, Notice, Understand
Four records
| Record | Time | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| train arrival | 9:05 | Port Mason East Station |
| pass receipt | 9:11 | two day passes purchased |
| Grace's photo | 9:12 | shuttle sign shows Bay 6 |
| service alert | 9:14 | 9:22 shuttle moved to Bay 4 |
Daniel: We arrived, bought passes and went straight to Bay 4.
Grace: We went to Bay 6, waited there and then caught the shuttle.
earlier state → simultaneous actions → change → final action
- 记忆帮助我们提出可能顺序;
- 记录帮助核对时间、地点和动作;
- 记录也可能不完整,因此只证明它实际显示的内容;
5. What People Actually Say
1. That's not how I remember it.
That's not how I remember it. I thought the change came after lunch.
2. As I remember it, …
As I remember it, the first board showed Bay 6.
3. I may be mixing up … with …
I may be mixing up the first platform with the one we used later.
4. What happened before / after …?
What happened after you took the photo?
5. The record shows …
The receipt shows that the passes were bought at 9:11.
6. We were both right about …
We were both right about the final bay.
Don't Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| You're remembering it wrong. | 容易变成人身判断 | That's not how I remember that step. |
| My memory is the truth. | 记忆不是完整记录 | As I remember it, … Let's check the time stamp. |
| The photo proves the whole story. | 一张照片只证明有限时刻 | The photo shows where Grace was at 9:12. |
| One of us must be lying. | 差异不等于欺骗 | We may be remembering different parts of the sequence. |
6. Grammar in the Scene —
The train arrived at 9:05.
Daniel bought the passes.
They boarded at 9:22.
Grace was waiting at Bay 6 while Daniel was buying the passes.
By the time Daniel returned, the board had changed.
The train had arrived, and Daniel had bought passes, and Grace had waited …
The train arrived. While Daniel was buying the passes, Grace waited at Bay 6. By the time he returned, the board had changed.
- The photo shows Bay 6 at 9:12.
- The alert says the shuttle moved at 9:14.
- This suggests that Daniel saw only the later board.
- The train ______ (arrive) at 9:05.
- Grace ______ (wait) while Daniel ______ (buy) the passes.
- By the time he returned, the board ______ (change).
- After they ______ (hear) the alert, they ______ (walk) to Bay 4.
- The receipt ______ (show) a purchase time of 9:11.
- Daniel ______ (remember) only the board he saw after the purchase.
7. Sound Natural —
That's not how I remember it.
I remember BAY SIX, / not Bay Four.
I may be mixing up / the FIRST BOARD / with the LATER ANNOUNCEMENT.
That's not how I remember that step.
What happened after you took the photo?
The record shows Bay 6 at 9:12.
We were both right about part of the sequence.
8. Practice
- Daniel and Grace remember the same first bay.
- Daniel bought the passes before the service alert.
- Grace's photo was taken at Bay 4.
- The alert moved the shuttle at 9:14.
- Daniel and Grace missed the shuttle.
- The final account includes both bay numbers.
- While I ______ (look) at the map, the platform ______ (change).
- By the time we reached the gate, boarding ______ (close).
- The notice ______ (appear) after we ______ (buy) the tickets.
- She ______ (take) a photo while I ______ (ask) for directions.
- The message now ______ (show) the corrected time.
Account A: We left the hotel at eight and took a bus to the museum.
Account B: We waited for a taxi first. When it didn't arrive, we walked to the bus stop.
记录:
- taxi request: 7:48;
- cancellation: 8:02;
- bus payment: 8:11;
- museum arrival: 8:34.
A写:“You sent us to the wrong gate.”
B想表达的是:“I repeated the gate shown after the update.”
- 描述原句产生的效果;
- 解释自己不是那个意思;
- 重新说明原意;
- 感谢对方指出;
- 提议重新核对;
- a photo at Gate 2 at 10:15;
- a receipt for two tickets at 10:18;
- a message saying “See you there”;
- a map downloaded last month.
- first location;
- simultaneous actions;
- later change;
- final action;
- one unresolved detail.
- 先讲自己的版本;
- 加入另一人的不同记忆;
- 给出两条记录;
- 合并时间线;
9. Make It Yours
- 写自己的60词版本;
- 请另一人写或模拟另一个版本;
- 找两条不含敏感信息的记录;
always / never式人格判断;- 把遗漏写成欺骗;
- 用年龄、身份解释记忆;
TWO ACCOUNTS → BEFORE / WHILE / BY THE TIME → RECORD → SHARED TIMELINE

They had requested a taxi at 7:48, so Account B is right about the original plan. They were still waiting when the cancellation arrived at 8:02. They then walked to the bus stop and paid for the bus at 8:11. Account A is right that the bus took them to the museum, but it leaves out the failed taxi plan. They arrived at 8:34. The records do not show exactly when they left the hotel, so that detail remains uncertain.
“You sent us to the wrong gate” came across as if I had ignored the information. I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was that I repeated the gate shown after the update. Thanks for flagging that. Could we reset and compare the time stamps? To avoid confusion, the current departure point is Gate 4.
- The photo shows someone at Gate 2 at 10:15; it does not prove where they went next.
- The receipt shows two tickets were purchased at 10:18; it does not prove who used them.
- The message shows an expected meeting; it does not prove that the people actually met.
- The map shows the route as published last month; it does not prove the route is current today.
- That's not how I remember it; I remember going to Bay 6 first.
- As I remember it, the alert sounded after we bought the tickets.
- I may be mixing up the original bay with the bay we used later.
- What happened after you took the photo?
- The record shows that the day passes were bought at 9:11.
- We were both right about using Bay 4 in the end.
11. Self-check
