Lesson 14 — This Isn't What I Ordered
1. Before You Start
- 不带攻击性地开启一次订单纠错;
- 用 ordered / expected / got 区分原订单、合理预期和眼前结果;
- 对照订单条准确指出两处不一致;
- 询问解决办法和所需时间;
I don't like it?
2. Main Conversation
Two details do not match
Daniel picks up lunch from Pine Street Deli. He checks the bag before leaving because the order is for him and Aisha.
Part A — Checking the order
Clerk: Pickup for Daniel?
Daniel: That's me. Thanks. Let me check the order before I go.
Clerk: Sure.
Daniel: I'm sorry to bother you, but there seems to be a mistake. This isn't what I ordered.
Clerk: Oh, I'm sorry. What did you order?
Daniel: I ordered one vegetable sandwich without cheese and one chicken sandwich. I got two chicken sandwiches.
Clerk: You're right. The label says one vegetable sandwich, no cheese.
Daniel: I was also expecting a bottle of still water, but this is sparkling water.
Clerk: I see both errors on the receipt. We can replace the sandwich and the water.
Daniel: Could you fix that, please? Aisha is waiting upstairs.
Clerk: Of course. The sandwich will take about six minutes. The water will only take a moment.
Daniel: Okay. How long will the whole order take?
Clerk: No more than seven minutes.
Part B — Confirming the correction
Clerk: Daniel? Here is the vegetable sandwich without cheese and one bottle of still water. Could you check them?
Daniel: Vegetable, no cheese; still water. Yes, that's right. Thanks for helping me out.
Clerk: I'm sorry about the mix-up.
Daniel: No problem. You fixed it quickly. I owe you one—well, not literally. It was your order to fix.
Clerk: Fair point. Happy to help, anyway.
Daniel: Thanks. Now I can take lunch upstairs before Aisha calls to ask where it is.
Check the story
- Why does Daniel check the bag before leaving?
- What sandwich did he order, and what did he get?
- What water did he expect, and what did he receive?
- How will the clerk solve both problems?
- How long will the whole correction take?
- Why does Daniel correct his own use of I owe you one?
Part B —
There seems to be a mistake 这里的 I was expecting...
4. Read, Notice, Understand
A. Compare the order slip and the bag
PINE STREET DELI — ORDER 184
Customer: Daniel
1 × vegetable sandwich — NO CHEESE
1 × chicken sandwich — regular
1 × still water — 500 ml
Paid: $24.50
BAG CHECK
2 × chicken sandwich — regular
1 × sparkling water — 500 ml
- Daniel ordered __________, but he got __________.
- He was expecting __________, but the bag contained __________.
B. What is checkable?
| 解决请求 | replace the sandwich and water | 告诉对方下一步 |
The order says no cheese. This is an allergy requirement.
5. What People Actually Say
1. This isn't what I ordered.
Excuse me, this isn't what I ordered.
2. I ordered …, but I got …
I ordered a small coffee, but I got a large tea.
3. I was expecting …
I was expecting two tickets, not one.
4. There seems to be a mistake.
There seems to be a mistake on the receipt.
5. Could you fix that, please?
The address is wrong. Could you fix that, please?
6. How long will that take?
A: We can make a new one.
B: How long will that take?
7. Let me check the order.
8. You're right.
9. We can replace it.
10. I'm sorry about the mix-up.
Don't Say It That Way
|---|---|---|
| You are wrong. | There seems to be a mistake. |
| You gave me bad food. | I ordered X, but I got Y. | “bad”
| Change it now. | Could you fix that, please? |
| Why so slow? | How long will that take?
6. Grammar Refresh — ordered、expected、got
I ordered a vegetable sandwich.
I got two chicken sandwiches.
I was expecting still water.
This isn't what I ordered.
The label says “no cheese.”
- Yesterday I __________ two tickets. (order / ordered)
- I __________ seats near the front, but these are in the back. (was expecting / expect yesterday)
- I ordered a blue cover, but I __________ a black one. (got / was get)
- This __________ the size on my receipt. (isn't / didn't)
- The order slip __________ “one large soup.” (says / said every day)
- The shop can replace it. Ask about time: “__________?”
7. Sound Natural —
I ordered a VEGETABLE sandwich, but I got CHICKEN.
I was expecting STILL water, but this is SPARKLING.
YOU gave me the wrong order.
There seems to be a MISTAKE. ↘
8. Practice
- Daniel checks the bag only after he gets home.
- The order slip says “vegetable sandwich, no cheese.”
- The bag contains one vegetable and one chicken sandwich.
- Daniel expected still water.
- The clerk refuses to replace the items.
- Daniel confirms the corrected order before leaving.
Receipt: medium blue shirt. Bag: small blue shirt.
a. This is bad.
b. I ordered a medium, but I got a small.Confirmation: appointment at 3:00. Message: appointment at 4:00.
a. I was expecting a three o'clock appointment.
b. Your time is stupid. The worker offers to print a new ticket.
a. How long will that take?
b. Fast.
- 礼貌开场;
- 说明三明治差异;
- 说明饮料差异;
Order: 1 large mushroom soup; 2 turkey sandwiches, one without tomato; 2 still waters.
Bag: 1 small mushroom soup; 2 turkey sandwiches, both with tomato; 2 still waters.
- A friend carries one of your heavy boxes upstairs. After the task is complete, thank the friend for stepping in.
- The same friend brought your forgotten keys. Use the friendly, nonliteral expression that says you would gladly return a small favor.
- Someone thanks you for spending two minutes checking a label. Respond warmly and close the exchange.
Order 291: one medium black notebook, two blue pens.
Delivered: one small red notebook, two blue pens.
You need the correct notebook before Friday.
9. Make It Yours
- 先核对订单;
- 用缓和表达开启问题;
- 用 ordered / expected / got 清楚对比;
- 请求更正;
- 对方提供一个未知解决方案;
Explain exactly what you ordered, what you got, what you want the business to do, and when you need it.
10. Answer Key
Check the story
- The lunch is for two people, so he wants to catch any error before leaving.
- He ordered one vegetable sandwich without cheese, but got a second chicken sandwich.
- Still water; sparkling water.
- Replace the sandwich and the water.
- No more than seven minutes.
- The clerk is correcting the store's own order error, not doing Daniel a personal favor.
Read, Notice, Understand
- one vegetable sandwich without cheese / two chicken sandwiches
- one bottle of still water / one bottle of sparkling water
- No. The materials do not show a different total, so there is not enough evidence.

C. 参考
Excuse me, there seems to be a mistake. I ordered one vegetable sandwich without cheese, but I got two chicken sandwiches. I was expecting still water, but this is sparkling. Could you replace those, please? How long will that take?
E. Lesson 12
- Thanks for helping me out.
- I owe you one.
- Happy to help.
Hello, I'm writing about order 291. There seems to be a mistake. I ordered one medium black notebook and two blue pens, but I got a small red notebook and two blue pens. Could you replace the notebook with the correct one, please? I need it before Friday. Please tell me how long that will take.
11. Self-check
I ordered …, but I got …
- 我知道 I was expecting …
