A chance meeting

Daniel runs into Maya at a coffee shop. He is waiting for his coffee when she calls his name.

Part A — Seeing each other again

Maya: Daniel? Is that you?

Daniel: Maya! Wow, long time no see.

Maya: I know. It's been ages. How have you been?

Daniel: Pretty good, actually. I moved back to the neighborhood last month.

Maya: Really? I thought you were still living in Seattle.

Daniel: I was, but I left my old job two years ago. I work from home now, so I can live pretty much anywhere.

Maya: That's a big change. Do you like being back?

Daniel: So far, yes. The area is really different now, though. This coffee shop used to be a bookstore.

Maya: That's right. I used to spend hours there on weekends.

Daniel: Are you still working at the hospital?

Maya: Yes, but I don't work on the wards anymore. I moved into staff training last year.

Daniel: That makes sense. You were always good at explaining things.

Part B — Catching up and saying goodbye

Maya: Thanks. What about your photography? Do you still take pictures?

Daniel: Not as much as I used to, but I still take some on weekends.

Barista: Large coffee for Daniel!

Daniel: That's me. Listen, I have to get going, but we should really catch up.

Maya: Definitely. Are you free sometime next week?

Daniel: I think so. Let me check my schedule and get back to you.

Maya: Sounds good. It was really nice seeing you.

Daniel: You too. And this time, let's not wait another eight years.

翻译提示：It was really nice seeing you 在告别时不是“看见你很好”，而是自然地表示“见到你很高兴”。学习口语时要记住整个表达，不要逐字翻译。

好久不见。常用于熟人之间，语气随意。

Long time no see! You look great.

2. It's been ages.

真的好久了。比 Long time no see 更强调很久没见。

It's been ages. We have so much to talk about.

3. How have you been?

这些日子过得怎么样？用于一段时间没见之后询问近况。

How have you been since you changed jobs?

不要机械地只回答 I'm fine, thank you. 更自然的回应包括：

• Pretty good, actually.
• Not bad. I've been busy.
• Good overall. How about you?

4. I thought you were still …

我以为你还…… 用来说明自己原先掌握的信息。

I thought you were still working downtown.

5. That's a big change.

变化真不小。可以自然回应搬家、换工作或生活状态改变。

You sold your car and started cycling? That's a big change.

6. Are you still …?

你还……吗？用于确认过去的情况是否仍然持续。

Are you still taking evening classes?

7. What about …?

……怎么样了？用于把话题转向对方已经提过的人或事。

What about your plan to open a café?

8. We should catch up.

我们应该找时间叙叙旧。这里的 should 常用于友好的提议。

We should catch up over lunch sometime.

9. Let me check and get back to you.

让我确认一下再回复你。适用于需要查看日程或信息的情况，语气自然、中性。

Let me check with my wife and get back to you tonight.

10. It was nice seeing you.

很高兴见到你。常用于短暂见面后的告别。

It was nice seeing you. Have a safe trip home.

Don't Say It That Way

不自然或不合适	更自然的说法
I haven't seen you for a long time.	Long time no see. / It's been ages.
How are you recently?	How have you been?
I will reply to you after checking.	Let me check and get back to you.
We should talk about old things.	We should catch up.

第一列不一定语法错误，但在这个场景中不如第二列自然。

本课用三个结构把“以前”和“现在”联系起来。

对话中的 How have you been? 和 It's been ages. 先作为完整寒暄表达掌握；其中的现在完成时将在第2课正式学习，本课不要求拆解或仿造这个结构。

used to + 动词原形

表示过去经常做或过去存在、现在已经不同的事情。

This coffee shop used to be a bookstore.
I used to spend hours there.

否定形式：

I didn't use to like coffee, but I drink it every day now.

注意：used to 后接动词原形，所以说 used to be，不说 used to was。

still

表示过去的情况现在仍然持续。

Are you still working at the hospital?
I still live in the same apartment.

not … anymore

表示过去的情况现在已经结束。

I don't work nights anymore.
We don't go there anymore.

对比：

I used to work in an office.
I work from home now.
I don't commute anymore.

这三句组合起来，就能清楚说明生活变化。

D. 把意思说得自然

根据中文情境写出自然英文。答案不必逐字对应。

1. 偶遇多年未见的朋友：“好久不见！你这些年怎么样？”
2. 你原以为朋友还住在北京：“我以为你还住在北京。”
3. 你现在要走，但想以后叙旧：“我得走了，不过我们应该找时间好好聊聊。”
4. 你需要查看日程：“我看看日程再回复你。”
5. 告别时说：“见到你真的很高兴。”

E. 完成你的版本

用自己的真实信息完成句子，然后大声读出来。

60—90秒口语任务

想象你偶遇一位多年未见的朋友。独自扮演双方，完成一段简短对话。必须包括：

• 自然打招呼；
• 询问近况；
• 说出至少两项生活变化；
• 询问对方仍在做的一件事；
• 提议以后叙旧；
• 自然告别。

可以先用下面的骨架：

A: Long time no see! How have you been?
B: Pretty good. I used to __________, but now __________.
