LISTEN & SHADOW
第87课配音
先完整听一遍,不看译文;第二遍再对照课文。
Lesson 87 — It's Hard to Translate
这个词很难直接翻译
本课只有一个现实任务:向不了解原语言背景的人解释一个概念,给出可用近似表达,同时明确它们各自覆盖和遗漏了什么。
1. Before You Start
本课目标
学完本课,你能够:
- 说明一个词没有唯一、固定的英文对应;
- 用释义、例子和对比解释语境中的含义;
- 区分“字典近义词”“当前语境的可用译法”和“完整文化定义”;
- 避免把一个词描述成某种语言或群体独有的品质;
- sense of care 关怀感
- context-dependent 依语境而变的
- connotation 隐含意义
- mediation 跨语言调解
2. Main Conversation
A useful translation can be approximate without pretending to be complete
Grace asks Lin to help with one line in the screening recap. They compare several English options against the viewer’s actual example.
Part A — Starting from the speaker’s example
Grace: One audience member said the laundromat had 人情味. I wrote “human kindness,” but I am not sure that captures what she meant.
Lin: There isn’t a single equivalent for 人情味. Before choosing an English phrase, what example did she give?
Grace: She mentioned the attendant keeping the last light on, the customer folding someone else’s clothes and nobody asking for praise.
Lin: Then, by 人情味, I think she meant a felt quality of human warmth and ordinary care in the shared space.
Grace: Would “kindness” be wrong?
Lin: Not wrong, but narrower. It names helpful behavior. In this context, 人情味 also describes the atmosphere created by several small actions and relationships.
Grace: What about “the human touch”?
Lin: It’s close to “the human touch,” but that phrase can also mean a personal detail added to a service or system. Here the viewer was responding to mutual care, not customer-service design.
Grace: So a rough translation would be “a sense of human warmth and care.”
Lin: Yes, provided that we present it as a contextual paraphrase, not the permanent English definition of the word.
Part B — Preserving meaning without exoticizing it
Grace: Should we keep the Chinese word in the English recap and explain it in brackets?
Lin: We could if the term itself matters to the discussion. But transliteration alone would leave many readers with sound and no meaning.
Grace: What matters here is the viewer’s interpretation of the film, so the explanation may be more useful than the original term.
Lin: I agree. You could write: “One viewer described the laundromat as having a sense of human warmth—an atmosphere created by small, unclaimed acts of care.”
Grace: That connects the phrase to evidence. It also avoids saying the film represents how an entire culture understands community.
Lin: Exactly. The comment came from one viewer about one fictional setting. It may resonate more widely, but the event did not collect evidence about a whole group.
Grace: What stayed with me was the same action, though I called it restrained rather than warm.
Lin: Those are compatible evaluations. You focused on the filmmaking method; the viewer focused on the social feeling produced by the scene.
Grace: I found the comparison useful because it shows why a one-word substitution would lose either the atmosphere or the concrete care.
Lin: Then your final note can include the rough translation, the example and the limit: useful in this context, not exact in every context.
Translation decision
| Candidate | What it captures | What it may miss or add |
|---|---|---|
| kindness | helpful action | wider atmosphere and relationships |
| human warmth | emotional quality of a place or interaction | the concrete mutual actions |
| the human touch | personal, humane detail | may suggest service design |
| a sense of human warmth and care | atmosphere plus action | still a contextual paraphrase, not an exact equivalent |
Check the story
- Which examples did the viewer connect to
人情味? - Why is
kindnesstoo narrow here? - What extra meaning can
the human touchhave? - When might Grace retain the Chinese term?
- Why is transliteration alone insufficient?
- What three elements will the final note include?
格蕾丝: the human touch 呢?
林: 它和 the human touch 很接近,但这个短语也可以指服务或系统中加入的个性化、人性化细节。这里观众回应的是相互关怀,不是顾客服务设计。
格蕾丝: 所以粗略翻译可以是 a sense of human warmth and care,也就是“一种人际温暖和关怀的感觉”。
| a sense of human warmth and care | 氛围加行动 | 仍是语境意译,不是精确对应词 |
翻译提示:这一课本身说明了译文原则:先看具体语境和例子,再选择近似表达,并把无法完全对应的部分说清楚。
4. Read, Notice, Understand
先问“这个人此处指什么”
By
人情味, I mean an atmosphere of warmth created by ordinary care.
调解从当前说话者的例子开始,而不是把个人理解包装成整种语言的固定定义。
没有单一对应不等于不可解释
可以用短释义、对比、例子和范围标记建立足够准确的理解。目标不是复制每一层联想,而是让接收者在当前任务中不误解。
保留原词也需要解释
拼音或原文能保留来源,但不会自动把意义传递给不知道该词的人。若术语本身不重要,清楚释义可能比异域化标签更有用。
5. What People Actually Say
本课负荷说明
本课主动掌握6个新词块。L86的评价词块在跨语言作品讨论中获得近R;新词块将在L88完成单元R。
1. There isn't a single equivalent for …
说明没有覆盖所有语境的一对一对应;准确、非神秘化。
There isn’t a single English equivalent for the expression.
2. By …, I mean …
给出当前说话者在当前语境中的含义。
By
人情味, I mean a quality of warmth created by ordinary care.
3. It's close to …, but …
给出近似译法并说明差异。
It’s close to “the human touch,” but that can suggest service design.
4. In this context, …
限制译法适用范围。
In this context, “human warmth” captures the atmosphere better than “kindness.”
5. A rough translation would be …
提供可用但不宣称完整的译法。
A rough translation would be “a sense of human warmth and care.”
6. What matters here is …
把解释拉回当前交际任务。
What matters here is the viewer’s response to several unclaimed acts of care.
Don’t Say It That Way
| 容易说出的句子 | 问题 | 更准确的表达 |
|---|---|---|
| This word cannot be translated. | 把“无单一对应”误写成“无法解释” | There isn’t a single equivalent, but we can paraphrase it in context. |
| It means “kindness.” | 把近似项写成完整定义 | In this comment, kindness is part of the meaning, but the atmosphere also matters. |
| Only this culture has human warmth. | 把词汇差异写成品质独占 | This language packages the idea differently; care and warmth are not exclusive to one group. |
| The English word is wrong. | 忽略任务与语境 | “Human warmth” works here, although another context may need a different phrase. |
6. Grammar in the Scene — Paraphrase and Mediation Frames
1. 否定绝对对应,再提供功能性方案
There isn’t a single equivalent, but a useful paraphrase is …
a single表示没有一个词能覆盖全部语境,不表示所有译法都同样好。
2. By X, I mean Y定义当前用法
By “warm,” I mean socially caring, not physically hot.
主语I很重要:它标记当前说话者的意图,而非宣布词典唯一真理。
3. close to …, but …同时传达重叠与边界
It is close to kindness, but it also describes an atmosphere.
but后应写对理解有意义的差异,不能只说not exactly the same。
4. 语境标记控制外推
in this scene / in this comment / for this audience / in an informal family setting能说明译法为何成立。若语境改变,应重新选择表达。
快速练习
- There isn’t a single English ______ for the term. (
equivalent / equality) - By “light,” I ______ not emotionally heavy. (
mean / meaning) - It’s close ______ “community spirit,” but more personal here. (
to / with) - A rough translation ______ be “human warmth.” (
would / will) - 把
It means kindness改成带语境和范围的版本。 - 为
面子或另一个自己熟悉的词写close to …, but …;不宣布唯一解释。
7. Sound Natural — 用停顿标出近似与边界
释义句在术语后短暂停顿:
By
人情味, / I mean a sense of HUMAN WARMTH / created by ordinary CARE.
对比句重读重叠项和差异项:
It’s CLOSE TO “the human touch,” / but here it describes MUTUAL CARE, / not service design.
rough不读成道歉,而是读成范围标记:
A ROUGH TRANSLATION would be / “a sense of human warmth and care.”
影子跟读
There isn’t a single equivalent for the expression.
In this context, it describes an atmosphere created by ordinary care.
It’s close to “the human touch,” but the emphasis is different.
A rough translation would be “a sense of human warmth and care.”
8. Practice
A. 理解检查
判断正误:
- Lin says
人情味always means exactlykindness. - The viewer refers to both actions and atmosphere.
The human touchcan be associated with a service or system.- Transliteration automatically communicates the meaning.
- Grace and the viewer use different but compatible evaluation standards.
- The final recap will claim to define the term in every context.
B. Captures / Misses / Adds
为kindness / human warmth / the human touch / community spirit各写一项捕捉到的意思和一项可能遗漏或添加的意思。
C. L86近R:评价与调解分工
使用What stayed with me was … / What I appreciated most was … / I found … effective because … / I wouldn’t say …, but …评论同一场面。随后说明哪一句评价创作方法,哪一句评价社会氛围。
D. 四步释义
选择一个自己真正熟悉、难以一词对应的表达,依次完成:no single equivalent → by X I mean → close to, but → rough translation。若不确定其文化范围,只解释自己的当前用法。
E. 读者版本转换
把同一解释分别写给:会中文的同事、不懂中文的朋友、只有30秒的活动主持人。三版信息重点可不同,但不得互相矛盾。
F. 找出过度主张
修正:English has no way to express this feeling. People in China value relationships more, so only Chinese has this word.
- 一个大致译法是“a sense of human warmth and care”。
- 这里重要的是这位观众如何理解影片中的几个小行动。
9. Make It Yours
建立一张可修改的概念卡
写下term / speaker / context / example / rough translation / difference / limit。卡片标题使用“当前工作解释”,不要写“唯一正确翻译”。
反向复述测试
请不了解原词的人只看你的英文释义,再用自己的话复述。若他把氛围误成服务设计、把个例误成文化规则,就调整解释。
三天后的复测
不用原卡片,在90秒内重新解释同一表达。比较两次版本,保留更清楚的例子和范围标记。

7F参考
This version treats a missing one-word equivalent as if English speakers could not describe the feeling at all. It then moves from one lexical difference to an unsupported comparison between large groups. A more defensible version is: “There is no single English equivalent that covers every use of
人情味. In this viewer’s comment, ‘a sense of human warmth and care’ conveys the film’s atmosphere, although another context may require another paraphrase.”
7H参考
- There isn’t a single English equivalent for the expression.
- By
人情味, I mean a warm atmosphere created by ordinary acts of care. - It’s close to “the human touch,” but here it is not about service design.
- In this context, “human warmth” captures the atmosphere better than “kindness.”
- A rough translation would be “a sense of human warmth and care.”
- What matters here is how this viewer interpreted several small actions in the film.
开放题答案不唯一。合格调解必须给出语境、例子、可用近似项和至少一个差异;不得从词汇差异推出群体品质差异。
11. Self-check
- 我能说明“没有单一对应”而不说成“无法翻译”。
- 我能从当前说话者的语境和例子建立释义。
- 我会说明近似词捕捉了什么、遗漏或增加了什么。
- 我不会把一个表达写成某种文化独有品质的证明。
- 我完成了三版读者转换、2—3分钟调解和三天后复测。
