Lesson 71 — Here's the Evidence I Found

1. Before You Start

  • 先写具体判断,再选择相关证据;
  • 用关系从句和分词结构压缩来源、对象和时间信息;
  • 区分结果数据、过程数据和主观体验;
  • 解释两项证据如何共同支持一个有限判断;

2. Main Conversation

Evidence is relevant to a claim, not impressive by itself

Maya and Marcus must prepare a two-minute evidence briefing. They have the eight-week log, three observed check-ins and a nine-response staff pulse survey.

Part A — Choosing evidence for the claim

Marcus: Here’s the evidence I found: an eight-week log, an observer note covering three meetings and a pulse survey completed by nine of the twelve team members.

Maya: Before choosing evidence, what exact claim are we trying to support?

Marcus: “The bundled process made action ownership more visible in this support team.” That is narrower than saying it improved all performance.

Maya: Good. The evidence most relevant to ownership is the log showing that every new action had a named owner from week two onward.

Marcus: The observer note, written by a facilitator who attended weeks three, five and seven, records that owners were stated aloud for fourteen of fifteen new actions.

Maya: Those two sources describe the process from different angles: the stored record and what happened in meetings.

Marcus: The participants who answered the survey also reported greater clarity: seven of nine agreed that they knew who would follow up after the shorter check-ins.

Maya: Useful, but it is self-report. It supports perceived clarity among respondents, not proof that every owner completed the action.

Marcus: Should we include the drop from ten to six overdue items?

Maya: As context, yes. It is an outcome recorded during the same period, but it cannot isolate ownership from shorter meetings, the agenda, review or workload.

Part B — Explaining the bundle and its limits

Marcus: What evidence is not relevant enough for this briefing?

Maya: The survey item saying six people found the meetings “less tiring.” That matters to experience, but it does not directly support action visibility.

Marcus: And the average meeting length falling from twenty-nine to sixteen minutes?

Maya: It confirms that the format changed, but shorter duration alone does not show clearer ownership. We can mention it only to describe the bundle.

Marcus: Taken together, these findings support a limited conclusion: owners were more consistently named and most survey respondents perceived follow-up as clearer.

Maya: Add the outcome carefully: recorded overdue items also declined, although the sources cannot tell us how much ownership contributed.

Marcus: The main limitation affecting the conclusion is that all three sources concern the same twelve-person team.

Maya: There are two more: only three meetings were observed, and three team members did not answer the survey.

Marcus: Then I’ll use one sentence per evidence type—record, observation and self-report—followed immediately by the shared sample limit.

Maya: Exactly. Strong evidence communication makes the relevance visible and the limitation hard to miss.

Fictional evidence packet

Source Sample/period Directly records Does not establish
eight-week action log one 12-person team weekly overdue counts; named owners from week 2 which process feature caused the outcome
facilitator observer note meetings in weeks 3, 5, 7 owners stated for 14 of 15 new actions all meetings or long-term consistency
anonymous pulse survey 9 of 12 team members 7 report clearer follow-up; 6 report less tiring meetings views of 3 nonrespondents; actual completion

All three sources arise from the same team and bundled process change.

Check the story

  1. What exact claim do Maya and Marcus choose?
  2. Which two sources directly address whether owners were visible?
  3. What does the survey support and not support?
  4. Why is the overdue-item decline only context?
  5. Which evidence is not directly relevant to action visibility?
  6. What three major limitations will the briefing include?

Here's the evidence I found

4. Read, Notice, Understand

  • owner是否被记录;
  • owner是否在会议中说出;

  • record:系统中留下了什么;
  • observation:有限现场中发生了什么;

In this twelve-person team, … . However, … .

5. What People Actually Say

1. The evidence most relevant to … is …

The evidence most relevant to ownership is the action log.

2. The report published/written by …

The note written by the facilitator covers three meetings.

3. The participants who …

The participants who answered the survey reported greater clarity.

4. The data collected during …

The data collected during the eight-week change show a downward count.

5. Taken together, these findings …

Taken together, these findings support a limited process conclusion.

6. The main limitation affecting … is …

The main limitation affecting generalization is the single-team sample.

Don’t Say It That Way

I found three sources, so the claim is strong. Three sources from the same team address different parts of a limited claim.
Nine people said it, so the team agreed. Seven of the nine respondents reported clearer follow-up.
The data prove performance improved. Recorded overdue items declined during the bundled change.
The limitation is a small sample. The single-team sample limits generalization beyond this case.

6. Grammar in the Scene —

The participants who answered the survey reported greater clarity.
The actions that had named owners were easier to trace.

The note written by the facilitator covers three meetings.
The data collected during the trial concern one team.

它们等于which was/were written/collected。

A table showing weekly counts provides outcome context.
Responses describing clearer follow-up support perceived clarity.

Reviewing the survey, the limitation became clear.
Reviewing the survey, Maya noticed the limitation.
When the survey was reviewed, the limitation became clear.

Data collected during the change show …

  1. The facilitator wrote the note. The note covers three meetings.(用过去分词)
  2. Nine participants answered. They reported their perceptions.(用who
  3. The table shows weekly counts. It provides outcome context.(用现在分词)
  4. ______ the survey, Marcus noticed three missing responses. (Reviewing / Reviewed)
  5. The data ______ during the change concern one team. (collected / collecting)
  6. The limitation affecting ______ is the single-team sample. (generalization / the log exists)

7. Sound Natural —

The observer note / WRITTEN BY THE FACILITATOR / covers THREE MEETINGS.

The participants who answered the survey / included NINE OF TWELVE team members.

TAKEN TOGETHER, / these findings support a LIMITED PROCESS CLAIM.

The evidence most relevant to ownership is the action log.
The note written by the facilitator covers three meetings.
The participants who answered reported greater clarity.
Taken together, the findings support a limited conclusion.

8. Practice

  1. The briefing claims that all performance improved.
  2. The action log records named owners from week two.
  3. The observer attended all eight weeks.
  4. Seven of twelve team members definitely reported clearer follow-up.
  5. Less tiring meetings directly prove clearer ownership.
  6. All three sources share the same team context.

B. Outcome / Process / Self-report

分类:

  1. overdue items fell from ten to six
  2. owners were stated for fourteen of fifteen new actions
  3. seven respondents felt follow-up was clearer
  4. meetings averaged sixteen minutes
  5. six respondents found meetings less tiring
  6. named owners appeared in the stored action log

The bundled process made action ownership more visible in this team.

  • meeting length;
  • named owner fields;
  • spoken owner assignments;
  • perceived follow-up clarity;
  • less tiring meetings;
  • overdue-item trend;
  • office temperature.

  1. The team agreed that follow-up was clearer.
  2. The observer proved owners were always named.
  3. Three independent sources confirm the result.
  4. The process improved all performance.
  5. Survey data represent every team member.

E. Lesson 69

  • 先写一个有限判断;
  • 每人只选择一项最相关证据;
  • 解释三项如何互补;
  • 立即给出共享样本限制;
What would this evidence not justify?

  • claim;
  • two most relevant sources;
  • what each records;
  • how they fit together;
  • one apparently interesting but less relevant item;
  • shared limitation;
  • defensible conclusion.

9. Make It Yours

This evidence is relevant because it records / observes / asks about …

若把7 of 9说成7 of 12the whole team,重新练习对象限定。
