Lesson 22 — You Might Want to Get That Checked

1. Before You Start

  • might want to 给出柔和建议;
  • should 给出较明确建议并说明理由;
  • had better 表达有明确现实后果的及时行动;
  • 承认自己不知道病因,不假装专业判断;

2. Main Conversation

Advice without guessing

Aisha and Daniel are finishing a design project at a shared table. Aisha pauses and stretches her right wrist.

Part A — A cautious suggestion

Daniel: Is your wrist bothering you again?

Aisha: A little. It's been sore for about ten days. It feels better in the morning, but it starts hurting after I work for an hour.

Daniel: You might want to get that checked.

Aisha: I thought it might go away on its own.

Daniel: It might, but I can't tell what it is. Since it keeps happening, you should talk to a healthcare professional.

Aisha: That's fair. I have notes about when it starts and what makes it worse.

Daniel: Good. It might be a good idea to bring those notes.

Part B — Matching advice to the situation

Aisha: The clinic's appointment line closes at five, and it's four forty-five now.

Daniel: Then you'd better call before it closes, or you'll have to wait until tomorrow to schedule.

Aisha: I'll call now. I'm not asking you to tell me what's wrong—I just needed a push to make the appointment.

Daniel: Exactly. I can notice that the problem keeps returning, but I'm not qualified to diagnose it.

Aisha: Thanks for keeping the advice practical.

Daniel: If you ever have an emergency warning sign, don't wait for a routine appointment—get urgent help.

Aisha: Understood.

Aisha calls before five, schedules a professional evaluation, and later attends it. The lesson does not state a diagnosis or treatment.

Check the story

  1. How long has Aisha's wrist been sore?
  2. When does it usually start hurting?
  3. Why does Daniel use should?
  4. What notes has Aisha kept?
  5. Why does Daniel use had better near the end?
  6. Does Daniel diagnose the problem?

Part B —

翻译提示:You might want to...

4. Read, Notice, Understand

A. Advice strength cards

Situation Appropriate action Why
A reusable bag handle feels loose You might want to check it. Low risk; gentle suggestion
A health problem has continued or keeps returning You should contact a qualified professional. Clear recommendation without diagnosis
The appointment line closes in 10 minutes You'd better call now. Immediate practical consequence
Someone has an emergency warning sign Seek local emergency help immediately. Stop ordinary advice; escalate

B. Advice is not certainty

might in You might want to … softens the suggestion; it does not mean the speaker believes the action is unlikely. should gives clearer guidance. had better points to a likely consequence if action is not taken.

C. Professional boundary

I can't tell what it is.
I'm not qualified to diagnose it.
You should contact a healthcare professional.

5. What People Actually Say

1. You might want to get that checked.

2. It might be a good idea to …

3. You should …

4. You'd better …

5. If it keeps happening, …

6. I can't tell what it is, but …

7. It's been sore for …

8. That's fair.

9. I'm not qualified to diagnose it.

10. Get urgent help.

Don't Say It That Way

You definitely have X. I can't tell what it is, but you should contact a professional.
Maybe ignore it. If it keeps happening, you should get it checked.
You'd better, because I said so. You'd better call now, or the line will close. had better
You might call emergency services. (明确紧急警示) Get urgent help now.

6. Grammar Refresh — might、should与had better

1. might want to:柔和建议

You might want to bring your symptom notes.

You should contact a healthcare professional.

3. had better:

You**'d better** call before five, or the line will close.

might want to call / should call / had better call

  1. A low-risk optional suggestion: “You __________ want to write that down.”
  2. A problem has continued for two weeks: “You __________ contact a professional.”
  3. The office closes in five minutes: “You'd better __________ now.”
  4. Complete: “If it keeps __________, make a note of the time.”
  5. Admit uncertainty: “I can't tell __________, but …”

7. Sound Natural —

You MIGHT want to write it down.
You SHOULD contact a professional.
You'd BETTER CALL NOW—the line closes in five minutes.

8. Practice

  1. Aisha's wrist has been sore for ten days.
  2. Daniel says he knows the diagnosis.
  3. The problem returns after she works for about an hour.
  4. Aisha has recorded when the problem starts and worsens.
  5. The appointment line closes the next morning.
  6. Aisha calls before it closes.

  1. Bring a notebook to a routine visit. (might want to / emergency)
  2. A non-emergency problem has continued and needs professional assessment. (should / go ahead)
  3. The booking line closes in five minutes. (had better / might be able to)
  4. A person has an emergency warning sign. (seek urgent help / maybe wait)

  1. You might want to take a photo of the broken screen.
  2. You should contact the repair service.
  3. You'd better save the file now.

伙伴问:“What do you think it is?”

  1. A hotel offers two options. Ask when the original room will be available if your group chooses to wait.
  2. After comparing a room with a desk and a room without one, state that your group favors keeping the desk room.

9. Make It Yours

朋友写来:“This problem has kept happening for ten days. What do you think it is?”

11. Self-check

  • 我能给建议补充理由,而不是只说 because I think so
